Garmin Image Unlock gimgunlock v0.04
Forget all other tools, this is amazing

Gimgunlock developed by wuyongzheng is yet another tool to unlock Garmin map files in IMG format. Although this tool exists since 2009, even with open source code available, it is almost unknown to the Garmin community. we hope it will have a new and bright future.

Features of gimgunlock:

* Direct Modification - unlike other tools which use GMapTool to split an image file, unlock each tile, then join all tiles; this tool unlocks all tiles in an image file directly without splitting and joining. Therefore, you should back up your original map first before running this tool.

* Super fast speed - The 1st result of direct modification is super fast unlocking. For example, a 2.3 GB image file can be unlocked in less than 4 seconds.

* Zero disk space - The 2nd result of direct modification is that no intermediate disk space is required. In fact, you can unlock a big image file on a SD card or USB connected GPS device directly and quickly.

* Intact header - The 3rd result of direct modification is that the original header of the image file is preserverd. Thus, timestamps, version number, Mapset name, etc. remain the same.

* Less memory used - this tools runs happily on Win32 without the need of 3GB switch.

* Multi-platforms support - this tool is distributed with Windows binaries. But those who prefer to run on Mac or Linux platform can compile the source code by themselves.

* Ease of use - to unlock, simply drag the image file over the icon of gimgunlock.exe, the dragged file will become unlocked. That's all. You can also run it in a command prompt window or batch file by supplying the pathname of the image file as the only argument.

Works also now with new devices ( except NTU maps )

files > 4 GB are generally not possible because of the restrictions of FAT32 file system

If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Being new at this, this may sound like a dumb question to the old timers. If I copy the largest .img file from one GPS and use gimgunlock to unlock it, I can then copy the resulting file to my other Garmin and have the same updated maps as on the first GPS?

Yes, once unlocked you can use a map in all compatible devices.

If you guys will bear with me, before I do the unlock I want to make sure I get everything right. When You drop the locked image file into gimgunlock will it write a new file or does it just unlock the file and leave it where it is? One more question and then I'll quit bugging you guys. Do you do anything with the other .img and.sum files or just leave them be?

Thanks for any help

The file will be directly unlocked - no copy. What do you mean with "the other .img and .sum files"?
You should read about files names in tutorials section.

Depending on which GPS I look at my Nuvi 855 has the map files in the Garmin folder and there are one or two other smaller .img files and without looking at both of them again I believe there was a .sum file. On the Nuvi 2597 the map files are in the system folder and there again there was at least one more smaller .img file. Those are the files I was wondering about.

As I told above, look on tutorials section in the thread "image names and pathes" or something like this.
