Do any stores carry off-brand GPS units?

Postby Jesseb342 » Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:31 pm

I'm looking to replace my GPS since my current one just died. It was a Rightway that I picked up for 40 bucks a few years ago at a grocery store of all places.

It came unlocked so I was running iGo on it most recently and I loved it. I'd like to pick up another one locally that I can run iGo on, but the grocery store no longer carries them. All the retail stores I've checked (wal-mart, target, best buy, etc...) are all about TomTom, Garmin, and Magellan.

I know I can find an off-brand on Amazon, but there's got to be a brick and mortar store somewhere that sells cheap units.

Any ideas?

Good question. But I don't think a grocery store near by me means it is near by you. More, I don't expect you to fly over here for saving a few bucks? ;)

In other words, can you give some vague location because only somebody in your proximity can give a valuable answer?

Here you find no name brands on the local markets and sometimes sellers in the shopping centers.
Last big "wave" was replacements for the build in units, so basically all the same hardware but with different front pieces to match the car.
For me only an Android based device would be an option these days as WM and CE are declared dead by Microsoft and all support ands.
Worst part about no name stuff is that you get what you pay for - and that in exactly that meaning.
Usually there are neither normal updates nor new firmwares available, YF international is one exception I know.
You need to know exactly what you must have and how much you will use it, after that you have to find out which available models offer the features you seek.
Don't be surprised to find out the device is slow and unresponsive or has a different screen resolution than advertised.
Wm or CE based device have a max of 800x480 pixel resolution, everything above is not coverd by MS standards and 100% a modified system that will cause problems with most programs.

IMHO buying real no name brands is often not worth the money.
There are forums specialised in the modding of firmwares, there you can find quite a few devices that get proper support from the community.
Just to name a few models with such support : Google (Asus) Nexus series, Samsung Galaxy phones, several HTC phones.
No name means no support, no updates, no fun in the long run - only with extensive research by the buyer you are able to find the unbranded devices worth buying.
