Best updatable navigation system?

Postby Razorblatter » Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:25 pm

Hi guys and dolls,

I have performed quite a lot of updates of (old) TomTom's and have learned a lot from them.
(Side remark: Although only yesterday I first 'ran into" a 2004 Go Classic with NC 4.420 and Benelux map v390.
Also a One First Edition with NC 5.410 and Benelux map v605...
Unbelievable but you can still update these...)

Basically, I want to know what's the competing navigation brand which performs well and can be updated with relative easy? For Dutch (the Netherlands) or European market?
I'm looking for brands with stand alone navigational units not Android or Apple apps for smart phones or tablets.

iGo? Garmin? Navigon?
I'm aware of the several forum parts dedicated to the several brands but I have no clue which one has got (fairly) up to date technology, nice features and class maps.

Who can advise me about this?

This looks [sounds] like a TomTom device. If it is, it is Linux-based and can only work with TT software and not Igo.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Am I expressing myself in an unclear way or are you misreading my post?

I'm not requesting an answer for a particular model but am seeking informational which brand of navigational devices (next to TT) are worth while to update.

I'm not sure you understand my post. You say that the devices have NC {Navcore] which is TT only. If you are looking for an Igo-type device, you want a WinCE device.

Razorblatter, you are unclear. Chas, you too

TomTom and Garmin are both Linux based devices and can only run their own GPS program and no other.

Basically, if the device is Windows CE based, any GPS program that is developed for CE can run on that device. And even TomTom and Garmin have Win CE builds that can run on almost any device.

I can not say about Navigon. Though I know Navigon has CE builds, I do not know if Navigon devices are all CE based or not. I do know that (on some devices?) it's needed to dive deep in the program code to get Navigon completely working on a non-Navigon device

There are other limitations too. TomTom and CE6 are no friends. Garmin XT is ... aged. Some devices need unlocking before you can do anything with theM. Some devices don't need any unlock at all. And unlocks depend on the device. Or you can run any program on it but lack a hardware driver and don't have TMC (e.g).
As an example that has come forward lately, Medion devices are easy to unlock. But only the older Medion devices are TMC capable with other than Gopal software. But iGO (on low memory Medions) and Primo run fantastic (with tha lack of TMC on the newer ones). Navigon needs often a program code intervention on (certain?) Medion.

I hope this makes some sense.

Razorblatter is saying that, to date, his modding experience is with TTs. Now he wants to "branch out" to other brands.
He is asking what other brands can be modded as easily as TTs. He is not asking what brands can be modded with TT software.
I hope this makes some sense.

Really it's only iGO 8 or iGO primo that you need, unless the region you need is not covered by it.

It's usually easy to install, sometimes you may need to edit a text file to suit your device hardware, there are no keygens or anything like that.
It contains everything it needs to work unlike TomTom and Garmin that rely on Windows Mobile resources that may not be included on Windows CE.
Map and other content updates are drag, drop, done!
You can change the whole UI and add new features with skins, to a degree everything is customisable.
Currently sleeping...

Thank you tendriver, you correctly interpreted my intention.

I once updated a Mio Spirit 470 (with help from Fatboyfun) running on WinCE and succeeded only to find out the gps-module was faulty as it would not connect with a satellite.
It took me a lot of time and effort and I want to avoid similar devices which are just a little bit too weak or outdated.

Also, on a separate note: TT often works with regional maps while the iGO maps work with individual maps for countries? How does it plan a route from Amsterdam to Budapest?

As I understand I will probably end up with WinCE devices that will have to be fitted with iGo 8 or primo software with iGO 8 being suited for the 'stronger' devices? (or is it just the other way around?)

Anyhow, say I have a given device of brand A and model B, how do I determine (of look up) which software is most suitable?

I've been asked to update a Garmin device which is about three years old. Where should I look to know what to do?

Please excuse my questions, I'm struggling to get a hold on the new non-TT lingo, procedures, programs and maps.
