I have an unlocked windows ce 5.0 device which I am determined not to throw away as im sure it can still be some use.

can anyone suggest some software that I should put on this to get a working SATNAV again.

Plenty of choices. IGO/Primo would be the easiest to install (copy/paste operation) but sygic, Garmin XT, ... all could be possible, specifications permitting.
Can you tell us what resolution, memory, sd card slot, ... has the device?

Its a Navman S50 3D, Not sure on resolution, 500mb internal memory (i think), 8gb SDHC Card

Are there specific versions of these softwares that I would need to run?

Garmin probably won't work on the S50. TomTom might, I am not 100% sure of this.
iGO8.3 or Primo (uses same maps as iGO) is your best choice.
Just go to the iGO section (http://www.navitotal.com/forumdisplay.php?65-iGO-MioMap-and-other) and download a program, one (!) map to get started and read some info here : http://www.navitotal.com/forumdisplay.php?128-How-to%E2%80%A6 about how to install igo or Primo.
