PNA GPS's are fading?

Postby eskro » Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:45 pm

Hi guys!
What do you think?
We'll we have to retire our PNA's anytime soon?
Seems like the more GPS technology moves forward,
the more typical generic PNA's will be off market....

As everything evolve, GPS's are no different....
I believe that very very soon,
we'll have no choice but to use Devices connected to the internet....
Think about GOOGLE MAPS NAVIGATION and the power the internet brings to it!!

In a way its great!
and on the other way, for someone like me who doesn't have a CeLL phone
and basically doesn't like to pay an extra monthly fee just to have access to
the internet outside of my home, it sux.......

But i know its going there and i know its probably the way to go....
So i believe GPS's companies will only develop GPS navigation technologies for use with Smart Phones...
so third party generic chinese devices will die in the long run...

i dont know when but, looks like i'll eventually be forced to buy a Smart Phone someday!

peace

You might be right, these thoughts are old news and were already spread by Xtyler92 (amongst others) on the former forum.
And I agree, I feel the same way.
But there is some light in the dark, at least for now.

Consider the different smartphone operating systems : Windows, Android, IPhone, Symbian ... I see development of the present Nav programs going on, and PNA existing for a while. And are Smartphones not PDA's with a phone function? As long as there is development on (let's say) Windows navigation programs, buying a Windows smartphone for GPS purposes is not the worst thing that would happen to you, right?
The same can be said for iPads and alike. And in-car-build systems. The present situation will exist for a while longer. In the end, we will all have our smartphone with GPS. Or better, a car not to drive in, but to tell where the car should take you (I do not mean a taxi ;)) But not now.
Besides, here, Mobile internet (when needed for navigating) is too expensive (as is telephone and internet :(). No one will even consider using GPS by Internet. Not to think about going to an other country. That would be unpayable!!!!
This applies to my country, that is. So there is no market for internet GPS and definitively a market for PNA. As long as the prices don't drop. Which won't happen quickly for sure.

I'll point out that my local supermarket still sells VCR's!
There will be a market for the simple offline click 'n go type PNA device for a long time yet. Navigating on a smartphone while being hassled by calls and texts is at best annoying.

Yes, changes will be happening. That's just the way it is. I think the operative word is "evolution." BUT, I also think that the changes are not around the corner. If you remember 8-tracks that were later replaced by cassettes and then CDs, etc., you'll remember that although the changes took place they did not happen overnight BUT they did happen. I feel that the same thing will eventually happen with PNAs but don't go and trash your device just yet.
