What TMC socket is this?

Postby Skezza » Wed Jan 11, 2017 2:52 pm

So I bought a Binatone Carrera X430 with the plan to do some cool mounting **** in my next car.

Here's the problem, I can't find the TMC adapter...... they don't seem to sell it anymore. What's more, I have literally no idea what the hell this socket is ? Usually I call on Fatboyfun for this but I know he's retired, so let's hope :D

Anyone?

I could be wrong but doesn't that look like a standard USB socket?

Nope. It's too small.... at least certainly looks far too small.

I've seen USB AB Mini but i can't find anything remotely resembling a TMC antenna with that plug.

Yeh, plenty of looking around eBay. No luck at all. I'm wondering if they ever manufactured this type of TMC adapter. Maybe they fell back and used a standard USB GNS-FM9 one? Problem is, it's hard to really tell unless I buy one and they're coming in near £40 each. Hoping to see if I can snag a second hand one on eBay.

OK.... so an update and the whole thing begins to get weirder........... :022:

So, I've been flogging off a few cameras on eBay and all of a sudden I spotted this little cable in the box of a Fuji camera.

Surely not??? Oh yes....

The connector, which I've never seen before.... or heard of for that matter is called a UC-E6 (huh, I hear you ask?) and is found on digital cameras pretty much exclusively. I found this link with some limited schematics although there are plenty more online.

It really begs the question....... WHY THE HELL WOULD BINATONE USE THIS CONNECTION? A proprietary connection which seems to have a reputation of being problematic among Camera enthusiasts and the USB standards alike. Well, the only other company to use this connection on a sat nav is Evesham, they used it on the Nav-Cam. Problem is, it came out in 2006 and there's literally nothing out there for it now.

Google search also reveals absolutely zero TMC antennas using this type of plug.

However, I'm wondering if I've been all wrong here. I'm wondering if they initially planned to manufacture a TMC Adapter using this socket and then ran into problems along the way (perhaps no company were stupid enough to manufacture it), and switched to using a Mini USB and delivered a software update to fix any potential driver issues. I've found links to buy the compatible TMC Antenna which simply has a Micro USB plug. This company for example:

Furthermore, it might explain why there's a secondary power port when the device can be charged perfectly well from a USB connection? My concern is of course powering the adapter while also powering the device. If I have to get a TMC Antenna with a power source too, then it'll be powered from the device perhaps out of the power port, but then I cannot charge?

Thoughts?

This image contains the TMC antenna. What do we reckon, does that look like USB or that weird proprietary port?

Is there a way to directly contact the manufacturer and ask them? Wish I had better support for you.

Chas, I've contacted Binatone a few times. No luck. No reply. :(

I guess the only thing I can say is the program nav portion working properly? Is TMC vitally important? Maybe you should just forget it. Not what you want to hear but I don't know what else to tell you.

Is it sure that TMC is available for this device because the User Guide said

User Guide
X430
3rd edition (rev. 2)

12. TMC Port – Traffic Message Channel dongle connection point. (not
supported in this model)

That's interesting. Be utterly gutted if it's not supported. Maybe you're right Chas. I do like TMC though, it's the only thing keeping me on WinCE. I'm very close to buying a Android Sat Nav for internet nav..... Not entirely sure what that entails.... A cheap mobile phone maybe?

I think mine is the Carrera model. Does that make a difference?

Well that sucks.... if it's not got TMC then, well, I don't know. I guess Android is the way to go with iGo these days..... but I think what I want is an Android sat nav I guess with Internet traffic :022:
