5-Create Garmin/JCV (folder)
6-Download: [Please Register or Login to download file] and put it in JCV folder

8-Turn all unnecessary features off (i.e. A/C)
9-Leave your radio on (needed to recognize a USB is plugged in)
10-Goto the Navigation screen
11-Plug USB stick into vehicle, it will start Validating the USB stick
12-When the update prompts, follow the menus, when it askes for an unlock code, use JetMouse
13-Let the system update (1-1.5hr process, if engine is not on, the car will shutdown half way through the process, you will need to put it back in run mode immediately, so ensure you stay with the car if you do not have the engine on)
14-It will either give a Maps updated successfully message or Reflash failed message. Just verify that the maps loaded fine, but you should be GTG.

@estoyloco

Hi again! Thanks for your great description!

Please, can you post a little "how to" for export device.xml from unit, to USB for Garmin Express!

The problem ist, there is a big difference between CTP 2012 and 2013!

I can't export it from CTP 2012!

Thanks,
Mike

There isn't really any need to get your XML file from the CTP2012 radio. Don't worry about it, we were just swapping them with each other to figure out what we needed to do.

Just follow the steps posted earlier and you should be fine..

On the "where to" screen, press and hold the upper-right corner for about 15 seconds, opposite of the signal bars. It's not nearly as useful as the CTP2012 units.

Sorry to be a pain, but why is it that we need the 3490/3590 Garmin devices to update the 8.4N CTP2012? Are the maps on this forum not sufficient?

I thought you already had the xml. I think I actually asked you how to obtained one a few posts back. There isn't a way to export from CTP2012 that I know of.

If you can get it to work by all means go ahead. Just having the GPS gives you clean downloads direct from Garmin.

These radios can be very picky about which maps can be installed. I've successfully loaded maps that I've found on the net, but occasionally there are problems with some of those because they're unlocked or modified in other ways that are just enough to cause the system to have errors.

I bought a dedicated Garmin unit with lifetime maps specifically to get map updates that were comparable with my system. A little extreme, but I get a little compulsive about things like this sometimes. Getting untouched Garmin files right from the source is the most pain-free, sure-fire method that I've found. A nice bonus is that my wife gets to use the Garmin in her Wrangler, now that she's gotten used to using it in my car.

@estoyloco simply posted the easiest way to have a no-hassle update experience. If you use downloaded maps, you might have to try a couple different copies before you find one that the radio seems to like.

Sure it does, better yet, it even warns me in my native language :-)

[Please Register or Login to download file]

It works by loading your own custom POI's.
You may download .gpi file with speed camera locations for your country from the Web or create it for example with Garmin POI Loader.
This is for sure not exactly the same as original speed camera warning for other Garmin devices, but it does its job.
Basically the function of proximity alerts will be enabled in Navi/Settings.

Take an empty usb fat32 stick and copy your file as below:
Garmin/POI/poi.gpi

Plug it when your Garmin is fully operational and agree to install it.
