OK, so...I went to the dealer today and they said that I have the most up to date software. I'm still having issues trying to get this all to work, still getting the error message and no updated maps. I'm thinking maybe I might be using the wrong North America maps. If anyone's been able to get the North America maps to work, what version did you use? With/Without mexico, Canada, Hawaii? Thanks for any assistance!

I installed the latest mapset (2014.10) into my CPT13 a couple of days ago. I used the full set of files that came down to my standalone unit, a nuvi 3590.

Map, Junction View, 3D buildings, ASR, myTrends, Time Zone, etc. Everything else seems to be working perfectly, and the voice recognition seems to work better than it ever has.

I have no idea if TrafficTrends is working, but to be honest, I never noticed if it even worked before.

Thanks for that info. It looks like there might be a couple of files that are unique to this unit, since there are more ASR files than in a normal release. I was hoping that there would be some Vehicle files or special POI data like the built-in dealer locations, but your list doesn't appear to have any "secret" files.

While I was able to update CTP13 unit to City Navigator North America 2013.40, all efforts to update to 2014.10 version are futile. After trying to verify files for about 5 seconds (successful verification takes much longer) It shows error that map update in not successful and to see dealer. I tied to give it all files (gmapprom, gmap3d, gmaptz, JCV, ASR, etc.), only img files, only gmapprom.img file, and various permutations, but I get error each and every time. Bummer!

hernanzy A friend of mine was updating EU maps on his CTP2012, with software version above 4.xx and it went through without any issues.
The only difference between CTP2012 and CTP13 in behavior during the update is that CTP2012 wants and activation code, and CTP13 does not.
There was a problem with updating to newer maps on CTP13 devices which had older software version. But software update (currently 3.15) solved that issue.

Maybe CTP2012 also needs a software update to be able to handle new maps ?
I am a newbie to this, and I used this forum to know how to update the maps, so if you also do everything according to instructions found here, maybe you ought to start with Garmin software update first ?
And here, I am afraid it won`t be easy to get an update file from the dealer, because they probably do not know how to get it, they are in majority lazy dumbasses.
I think you should write an email to Fiat/Dodge/Lancia/Chrysler headquarters and ask them to get you newest gupdate.gcd file for your device.

I read in another forum about some POI bug that was in the earlier 2011 and 2012 units, and Garmin created a new software version for those units. I've got a 2013 unit, so I can't test it out, but it is v4.14.

This file was supplied with the express written permission of Garmin to share.

Does anyone know how it updates? Does it just keep storing without deleting old files?
The updates themselves are like 4GB big. The image files aren't that big of a deal but the JCV and ASR files are uniquely named... so I am not sure if they are getting deleted... can anyone confirm?

There's a SanDisk IC on the board, but there is some conflicting information as to how big it is. A quick Google search will make you think that it's a 16GB part, but the datasheet says that it is 8GB based on the laser etching on the part.

When I pull the DeviceConfig.xml out of my radio, it indicates that there is 5GB left, so I'm not sure either way. I've done a lot of updates (2013.30, 2013.40, 2014.10) and tried a couple different JCV files before I settled on the one I liked.

I'd really like to see what someone's DeviceConfig.xml says on a stock, un-updated unit and see what it reads.

A few days ago, I tried putting empty files with the same filenames as the old files to see if they would overwrite any possible leftovers, but the remaining size in the system was the same before and after that test. It could be that the files can't be empty, but I don't know how to go about making small dummy files that the device would use.

I wish I would thought about this before and paid attention to before-and-after states, but I'll have to wait until the next map update to see what's really happening. That is, unless someone else can do it before a map update.

Hmm the ASR/JCV/SID/SQLite structured files for 2013.40 are 2.33GB big
2014.10 is 2.32GB big.
I would assume 2013.30 is somewhere similar so ~2.33GB
I would also assume that the OEM ASR/JCV/SID/SQLite files are also around 2.33GB
Now the last 3D and Map files which would have overwrote due to it being the same name is 1.84GB

So Total on your system could be: 2.33x4 (ASR/JCV/SID/SQLite) + 1.84GB (Map files) = ~11.16GB.
So it makes it possible that it does use a 16GB memory card. 16GB - ~11.16GB = ~5GB.

So if this is the case none of the ASR/JCV/SID/SQLite files are being deleted. Going to need a way to figure out how to remove old files... I wonder if an official navigation update disc cleans it out.

BTW from stock CTP13 in Dodge Dart 2013:

Thanks for the info on the size remaining. I wonder what is consuming so much space on your system? Who knows, maybe that file isn't even accurate...

I was curious, so I'm trying a little experiment right now on my car. I copied the smallest file of each file type and then renamed them to match the names of the old, previous names. If they are overwritten, I should gain a lot of free space.

I'll update this post when it's finished.

Considering that a full packaged update is 4.1GB+ it could very well be that a single set + some system files account for it. A 8GB (7.45GB formatted) card - 4.1GB - system files could easily = 3.15GBs free.

First part of my experiment is done, here are the results:

I made a new set of files that was filled with 2013.30 and 2013.40 filenames, but I actually used the smallest filenames.

The actual files on the disk were 1,859,121,026 smaller than 2014.40 sets, assuming that we didn't count the extra set of JCV files, etc.

After running the update, my Junction View and searching POI's by voice were not working, but that would not be expected if the system deletes older files during the update process.

My free space after this experiment was 6,795,657,216 - or a reduction in used space of 1,788,017,936, which lines up pretty much with the difference between the source files.

It also tells us that the memory has to be greater than 8GB, since my main map was still active and it's 2,004,221,952 bytes.

I am now loading the real update again, so we'll see what the remaining free space is after it's finished. If it's still close to 6,795,657,216 we will know that the files aren't deleted (but able to be semi-cleaned up), but if it's back to around 5,007,585,280, than I think that the system is doing a cleanup of the old files after the update. Maybe.

I have taken the whole system out the dash on my own and I can confirm that there is 16gb SanDisk on Garmin module.

UConnect has another memory made by Toshiba and is only 4gb.
As I mentioned I own CTP13 model, maybe previously released CTP2012's had different memmory blocks on board...

Ok, second part done:

After reinstalling and testing that all of the new files were successfully installed (Junction View and Verbal POI searching working) the end result was around 500KB what it was before I started.

This really makes me think that the system does in fact perform a cleanup of the old files during an update.

I'm glad that I did this, because I have been concerned that I was going to run out of room.

Of course, the final experiment would be to simply install ONLY the gmapprom.img file and confirm that the system gains a lot of free space.

It also makes me want to maybe purchase an actual dealer update when the next one comes out just to compare the real files vs. ones that come from a nuvi.
