RB5 Uconnect touch 8.4N Map update needed

UConnect has another memory made by Toshiba and is only 4gb.
As I mentioned I own CTP13 model, maybe previously released CTP2012's had different memmory blocks on board...

The SanDisk IC in my CTP13 is labeled SDIN4C2-8G-U, but I think the European units need to hold larger maps perhaps. Regardless of what is stamped on it, the math doesn't make sense that it's only 8GB...

I've rigged up a jig to read the Uconnect 5GB module, but it only has Gracenote and Sirius stuff. Sadly, there was nothing interesting on it.

Maybe you have an idea how to connect the whole Garmin module to a PC, to be able to get into it in order to make a copy of files it contains ?
I did not try to disassembly this module from the board, but I guess it`s connected with some tape, not some popular input which you may find on PC`s motherboard like USB pin-plug etc ?

The original EU Map update 2012.40 was burned on standard SL DVD, the files itself are about 4GB, so probably it`s not why I got 16gb on mine ... maybe basically Garmin factory had run out of 8gb so they started to mount 16gb which were at stock at that time ;-)

Ok, third test done. I ran the update again with nothing on it but gmapprom.img.

After the update was completed, I gained 2,484,269,56 bytes, for a total of 7,491,854,336 bytes free. The size of the ASR, JCV, SID, and SQLite folders for 2014.10 is 2,492,876,595 bytes. This leaves only about 8 MB unaccounted for; not enough to even consider.

In short, I think that this proves that during the update, the old ASR, JCV, SID, and SQLite files are all deleted and replaced with any files that happen to be on the installation medium.

I'll be able to sleep better tonight...

The Garmin module is attached with a connector mounted under the board, it just pulls right off.

There are a lot of labeled test points all over the Garmin board, but they all look to be internal signals. I didn't see anything that looked like an easy PC connection. There has to be some way to connect it to a computer somehow, because the manufacturer isn't going to waste time programming the memory module before assembling it, but I didn't see anything jump right out at me.

There is an edge connector that looks like it might be used for something, but I didn't feel comfortable hacking on my actual unit. If I had a spare unit, I might consider playing around with it.

I upgraded my Nav myself, so I still have my old, non-Nav radio. I pulled the Uconnect module out of it and soldered wires between the test points and an MicroSD to USB adapter and was able to simply plug it into my computer and treat it like a normal SD card. It would be really nice if the Garmin board was that easy.

I'm in the process of trying to pick up another CTP2012 unit; I'll see if I can acquire it tomorrow. If so, I wouldn't mind taking a deeper look at it. Maybe we'll figure something out.

This makes me wonder how you install supplemental maps without deleting all the support files for the original mapset.

so when you installed just the gmapprom.img did it also erase the suppert files for 2013.30 and 2013.40?

Yes, it appears to have deleted all of the support files.

It really doesn't seem like it's really worth keeping two maps, as far as I can tell. Just bite the bullet and install the new ones, or buy an official upgrade disk!

tanbam, when you make USB for full update to 2014.10, can you please execute
Code: Select all
dir /S
command and post output here? I have most difficult time updating North American CTP13 (v3.13) to 2014.10.

Even just giving gmapprom.img in Garmin directory results in validation error (locked or unlocked version of image).

753951 If you do everything right and still get errors, you probably need newer software version. We had the same problem here in Poland, older software was crashing or basically refusing the newest maps.
Update to 3.15 solved this problem, if you`re interested PM me.

I have 3.13, as indicated. That might be the issue. I'll first check with dealer to see if they know anything about update for North American UConnect.

It's not the Uconnect update that you need, rather it's the Garmin update. In any case, they're probably charge you to install something that is provided free from Garmin...

My unit was 3.14, and I updated the Garmin module to 3.15 in the parking lot after work this afternoon. No troubles at all in my North American unit. The only thing that I've noticed so far is that the information window that pops up when you re-install the same or older maps is more verbose.

After the software was updated to 3.15, I ran the map install again on the way home to put everything back in order after my experiments last night. The full map suite loaded perfectly - I was a little concerned that my radio might only want European maps afterwards, but all is well.

As far as the validation error goes, is it a system-type error with a 0x**** code, or one that says that the maps are not compatible with your radio? If it's the 0x**** error, try a different USB stick. I've got four in my house that do not work with the radio.

Thanks. I got update file and I'm going to run it tomorrow. It is 0x... Error, but it is same USB stick I used to update to 2013.40 map. Good suggestion, nevertheless. I'll try different stick too.

One more tidbit of information:

After updating my radio to 3.15, I found that I am able to enter Test Mode (I hadn't been able to on a CTP13 model yet) and look at some of the files. Not enough to see the actual folders/file sizes and such, but enough to see what main maps were loaded.

It appears that when you update the map to a newer version, the system renames your old map from gmapprom.img to gmapsupp1.img - and leaves it there. I've reinstalled 2014.14 multiple times now, and my gmapsupp1.img file is 2013.40.

Update to 3.15 from 3.13 went smooth. But same flashing problem when trying to update to 2014.10. I must be cursed. Tried different USB stick. Formatted as FAT32 with 4096 byte sector.
After trying to validate I get this error screen 5516. When I press OK I get message "Error on reflashing 0x31A0". I'll have to download new img file (mine is legit version from nuvi 3790) and try again.

Yes, it sounds like something wrong with the map, but i've also seen that error when I start the update with the engine running.
