I guess this is where ST.exe enters the game. Not 100% sure, but ST.exe seems responsible for loading whatever it finds on the SD-Card. The instructions are most likely to be found in CE's registry which is "hard-flashed". If you make any changes to the registry these would be overwritten at next cold reboot.

So this would leave us one mayor option: Boot from folder BACKUP, putting all Primo stuff in that folder. Downside would be the quite long booting time which would occur on more or less every power cycle.

In order to get this running I would assume, that the "algzhdvb" ini-files should be modified again in a way that they do nothing anymore....

There is one other option, which just comes to my mind. Would it be possible to put a symbolic link to clarion.exe (stored on SD) into internal storage? The device would look into internal storage to run clarion.exe but would then be redirected to SD-Card where clarion/primo.exe would be executed.

But first of all I`ll give chas521's version a try. There must be a way to get sound running.

By the way: I wasn't aware that the "Extract tool" with the modified ini's was done by you. Great work!!!!! Thanks a lot!!!!

Ok, tried the Navitotal Primo 2.4 Version now. I followed the instruction but had no GPS or TMC. So I added the following to sys.txt:

[gps]
port=2
baud=57600
protocol=nmea
maximise_baud=0
set_messages=1

[tmc]
port="COM,1"
source="gns"
poweron_delay=500

Now GPS and TMC are ok again.

But, I am still having the same no-sound issue as before.

@chas521: The Clarion system is made out of a total of 3 components:

1.) VX709 - that's Radio / DVD / Touchscreen (2 DIN)
2.) NP509 - that's the Navigation Blackbox with Win CE 5.0 and preinstalled Igo8 (64 MB) ([Please Register or Login to download file] )
3.) Furthermore there is an interface between both units (CCB509)

In order to verify the Sound problem I opened the Desktop on the NP509 and went into Windows CE Sound settings and clicked the play sound button. Nothing happened.

I wonder if there is anything within the original Clarion Igo8 installation which interacts with the interface to the VX709 which cannot be reached from OS-Level. That might explain that there is absolutely no sound at all. If this interface is called from within primo.exe, then I would assume that we might have the wrong promo.exe - most likely there will be no suitable primo.exe at all.

I could send you an PN with the Clarions Igo8 backup from my device if that helps...

What do you think?

I was able to load Primo from the flash memory. Just follow the renaming of the folder and *.exe file. Once it reboots, insert your sd card with all the file extractor to get into WINCE. The update tool will now begin to count down before it tries to copy files from unit. Now you have got to eject the SD card before that happens. There will be some fatal error box that will appear, just cloase it or ignore it. If you can see a 'NAVI' tab at the bottom toolbar, click on it. This will show you the non-crashing 'Primo'. If no 'NAVI' tab, go to /my flash disk/clarion (primo renamed) and double click on the the *.exe file.
To remove the WINCE toolbar from the screen, click on the start up button then tool bar setting, a pop up box will appear and just tick 'auto hide' box. Then click 'ok' from the top right.

You now have a working 'Primo' but without voice still. I have tried turning the ignition on/off and went for a drive around the block, it all works well apart from the voice, but the sound from the car stereo does work well (FM, MP3 and other sounds).

This no sound issue might be similar to navsure devices where you need a special version of iGO to control the hardware audio mixer...

A version of iGO you'd normally get from here and other similar sites lack this feature.

If your device has a wince based mp3 player, try playing a mp3 in the background, then get iGO to make some noise, if you can hear iGO's sound while the mp3 is playing then it is the case that you need a special version of iGO.

Silly question but could you have pressed the mute button by accident? Also, have you made sure that all the volume settings in options are at their max?

Have you tried these entries for the sys.txt

[dynamiccompressor]
compressor=1
a0=56806
thrs=24703
ratio=8
gain=12

and

[sound]
ding=0
pause_mp3_sooner=1
queue_length=200
mute_os_key=1
maneuver_chimes=0
sound_muted=1
voice_muted=0
wheelsound=1
dynamic_volume_type=0

[tts]
tts_buffer=131072
announce_exit_directions=1
tts_logics=3
priority="HIGH"
always_say_road_name=1
announce_street_name=1
skip_exit_numbers=0

and

[sound]
dynamic_volume_os_volume_max = 255

I am wondering if it has something to do with this line.

[modules]
IEXTERNAL_BACKGROUND_PLAYBACK_MANAGER="CLARION_EBP_MGR"

This is from the data.zip of the original clarion file located in the 'project_config' folder.

I will try and insert this in the *.ini file in Primo, so it will look like this.

[modules]
IEXTERNAL_BACKGROUND_PLAYBACK_MANAGER="CLARION_EBP_MGR"
IITINER_LIST_MANAGER=IGO_SPEC_ITINER_LIST_MANAGER
ITMC_STATION_SELECTOR=TMC_STATION_SELECTOR_IGO
IFM_STATION_CACHE ="FM_TMC_STATION_CACHE"

Any idea?

There is no CE based MP3 player. NP509 is solely designed for running the navigation software. All other multimedia functionalities are maintained by the VX709 unit.

However, I tried to play a sound from Windows CE's sound settings. Also here nothing can be heard. That's why I am a bit afraid that you might be right - I mentioned something like this above...

Well, no silly question at all. But it's not the case. All volume levers are set to max, not muting.

By the way, just rebooted the device into the factory delivered Igo8. I realized one further topic. Igo8 reacts on every key pressed on the screen of the headunit VX709 with a piezo beep from inside the headunit. This does not work aswell with the Primo 2.4 version we installed.

This once more may be an indication that Fatboyfun might be right and that clarion.exe has certain capabilities to access the interface to the headunit. And maybe primo.exe hasn't.

Or we need to learn more about the Clarion Igo8 and understand what some settings are doing - as jhen_622 mentions.

But what if we had a clarion.exe (Primo 2.4) as it is used in some of the newer Clarion models?

@Fatboyfun, chas521: I have the full backup of jhen_622's and my Clarion Igo8 in my Dropbox - so if you would like to take a look, I'll PN you the links.

And if I continue to think about this, we might never get it to make any sounds with any software not specifically redesigned for the Clarion unit...

My next thought is, that Europe Maps from Naviextras for this device appear to be outdated but sold as very current version... Grrrr....

Just took a look at the original clarion.exe with a HEX-editor. I found exactly that name of the mentioned module. An guess what: There is no finding in primo2.exe. That is another indication for a Clarion-specific EXE.

In the mean time I have at least found a Primo 1.1 exe from some Clarion source which also includes the BACKGROUND_PLAYBACK_MANAGER module. Possibly 9.6.2.205481 does also include it, as this version is also used on Clarion units. That would be a Primo 2 version, which we could use to replace the one we have right now.

It's very possible that it will work with the proper files. I would try everything [anything] but I would make sure that you back everything up first and even then, proceed very carefully. Look at it like this. Ultimately, it's your device so you have the final word. The NNG [iGO] people include a license in the real version that makes you purchase updated maps from them. A cracked version from here lets you update from our threads.

Well, everything backed up - double! However, it is getting obvious that Clarion and NNG have created a hard- and software combination which is far away from standard. I come to the conclusion, that only a "healed" version from any other Clarion device would help to get to Primo 2.4.

Or do you happen to have a Primo 1.1 package alike the one I got from here? (This by the way was the best compilation I've ever seen!) Then we could perhaps at least get 1.1 running with the exe I found on the net, as it also includes the Clarion specific modules. Any link would be highly appreciated!

OT: In the end I'd prefer getting a new unit instead of spending Euros and Euros on Maps which are sold as the most current but which are outdated by up to three years (yes, there are roads which where included into Navtec maps data four years ago but not in the latest NNG maps - and these roads where mayor roads!)

I am also considering to buy a chinese 2DIN unit as it only cost the same price as a new map. Clarion is charging AUD225 for updates on SD card.

If only someone can cr@ck the original IGO8 (clarion.exe) that came with it, at least it can read maps that you load in it even just by staying with IGO8.
