Birdseye satellite imagery subscription Discontinued

Birdseye satellite imagery subscription Discontinued

Postby posti » Thu May 04, 2023 4:17 pm

Hi guys
This is my first post although I registered a while ago.
I use a 78Map SC. I bought it specifically due to the Birdseye capabilities by using .jnx files of marine charts.
Recently Garmin discontinued the subscription and I am a little upset with the situation :013:
I perused the forum and found little information about Birdseye.
Is there any way of circumventing the limitation and regain capability of loading .jnx files into the device?
Thanks in advance for your help

Assuming this is a GPSMAP 78sc there is a way to patch the firmware to allow you to use JNX files you already have.
You will need to tell us what your HWID is.
Have a look at this thread about patching.

Hi GarmanNuvi... Thanks!!! you have been much more than kind.

And I have to apologize for my lack of knowledge and my panic to turn the device into an expensive paperweight...

I read, in the first post of the thread you recommended, a procedure using a patcher, dropping files, pressing the screen, etc., etc ... something that seems like ancient Greek to me and I also suspect that is not applicable to my device since the 78sc does not have a touchscreen...

Is there any “Tutorial for Dummies” with step by step instructions on what do I have to do with the file you kindly provided?

I also have to thank you for the patience you are having with this old dinosaur who refuses to learn new tricks! ;-)

Download and unpack GPSMAP62_78_730_JNX.rar on to the PC where your device is attached. Your "desktop" makes it easy
Warning:
Be sure to remove & Back up All BirdEyes images (JNX files) already present on device before apply the Patch
BirdEyes images can be restored after patch is applied.
Then you can drag-and-drop GPSMAP62_78_730_JNX.rar onto the WebUpdater "Short cut icon" on your desktop.

OH BOY!!!! IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!

I just dragged and dropped the .jnx files into the Birdseye directory and... voilá!!!

Just one additional (and hope final) question... if there is any future FW update for the device... do I have to go through this procedure again? I mean... look for the patch, install it and load the jnx files into the device?

Thanks again for all your help and patience!

GPSMAP 62/78 software version 7.30
as of August 25, 2021

It's not impossible there will be another Firmware update ,but there are generally multiple updates at the beginning of the life of a device due to user bugs/feed back.
If you see Garmin offering an update don't install it until you have posted here so we can make you & others the latest JNX Patched version.

Does the patch works for the 62s?
I just found the news about the demise of Birdseye and I need to find a way not to have the 62s as an expensive paper weight.

Yes only if you confirm your HWID from the device is 1113

HWID Confirmed, thanks. I'll give it a try later. I still have the subscription active for another month.

Download as much imagery as you can as fast as you can... downloading satellite imagery via Global Mapper is sort of a pain in the back... ;-)

This would be so awesome to get working on the new Forerunner 965...has anyone attempted this or know a way to get/make satellite imagery for this watch?

As long as the forerunner can load .jnx files, there are ways to download imagery and convert it into jnx files

[edit] Do watches accept maps???? :bs_quesexclaim:
