Cannot Unlock Maps

Postby EllaGuru » Fri Dec 06, 2024 4:36 pm

I'm guessing I may not be the only one but here goes. I recently uploaded new maps on my Garmin Nuvi58. All seemed to go well. Garmin Express says the maps are there. However, when I turn on my Nuvi58 I'm greeted by "Detailed maps are required for routing. No detailed maps found on this device", Screen then changes to "Cannot unlock maps". If I look in the Garmin folder on the Nuvi it just has a link to the folllowing: C:/Users/wingreen/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/8RY1KWP9/GarminDevice[1].xml.
I tried Garmin support but they were hopeless and just suggested I try re-loading the maps via Garmin Express. Same problem. So Garmin said they could sell me a new one! Now, its POSSIBLE, I disconnected the Nuvi too early (not sure). I've had the Nuvi for years and never had a problem with uploading and using new maps before. Any ideas? Is it a corrupt code or something? If so, is there a fix? Any ideas to resolve would be much appreciated.

So your nuvi 58LM only has a link and no garmindevice.xml in the Garmin folder on your device
Does the GarminDevice[1].xml on your PC look like this.
This board requires you to be registered and logged-in to view hidden content.

To show your hidden .system folder Read this
Use this tool [Please Register or Login to download file] to share how the current nuvi 58 files are laid out and what is missing.
Tick/check show hidden and system folders
Before you post, "The archive is corrupt or damaged"

Sorry - I'm hopeless with IT. I tried those links but got completely stuck. This what is in my Garmin folder on my Nuvi58 (its just Nuvi58): GarminDevice.xml. It looks like a Bing link. It takes me to
file:///C:/Users/wingreen/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/7MTAO6M1/GarminDevice[1].xml - but that folder doesnt exist on my PC. I tried Garmin support but they were hopeless - just offered me a discount on a replacement - which was still more expensive than a Garmin I could buy from Currys. Sorry - I'm not much help.

Thanks for the link. I have actually managed to download (unzip etc etc) an image file that I have managed to put on an SD card and insert into the Garmin. That does give me a lot of map information but there is no PostCode search facility etc and its not as useful as the genuine Garmin maps. Is this link for UK&Ireland (looks like it might be for Germany?)? Thank you.

UPDATE: I did download, unzip etc and put it on a MicroSD card and, yes, ....it does at least give me maps I can use. (I'm still keen to try and resolved the actual Garmin issue though)

Make a copy of your Garmin folder and put it in my Drop folder
