Garmin Maps for Kenwood DNX 7210BT

Postby Capitano » Mon Jan 25, 2016 12:58 pm

It uses the garmin maps, I know I can update via USB, how do I do it to update to the latest maps, I have searched and searched and I am getting nowhere. Say I have an unlocked map image, what folder do I put it in, in the USB stick? I wish I could access the internal drive of the navigation, all I am told it has to be hard wired, which is all confusing for me.
Please help if I am not asking too much.....

Ok! So First of all the last map is 2016.20 for NT you may use this one but becarefull to be unlocked one! there are two ways to use an new map on your device !
1.You create a stick like you have done the map on \Garmin directory and the name gmapsupp.img no need to do any update you just go and check what maps are on the device and shoud recognise but in this case you have to let your usb connected on your device always.
2.You connect your USB in the back side of your device where are two USB ports on this one where it is writen USB (not ipod) and then you go to the menu put the device as massive storage it is starting reading the device take few seconds... if it is note recognised repeat again then you go to navigation mode go to Settings\System\About\Update Map and it will ask you if you want to continue say yes and it will take few minutes maybe 10-15. when finished take off your usb and should be ok if you want go to navigation settings\Map\About and see what map is installed.
I hope that I helpded you!

Thank you for the advice, there is only one USB port on the device, I will download the latest map from here and install it then see what happens.

According to the manual should exist also two other USB ports on the back side of the device!

No there is only one USB input. Unless its possible to solder a new USB input on the unit?
The problem I am having is I don't know what is really going on in regard to the maps. I know I have to download CT Nav Eu 2016.20.... but it takes forever, so I have looked for a torrent and secured one, so will try to format a 8GB usb pen-drive then follow your instructions.

I havent had time because of exams
anyway this is where I am at with this headunit.... and I am still getting it wrong
I am just going round in circles and not coming to a full conclusion. Basically I have downloaded the CiTy Nav NT Europe 2016.20 then created a folder 'garmin' all in small letters. I have the following in the garmin folder
-ASR
-G2S
-JCV
-SQLite
-GarminDevice
-gmapsupp.gma
-gmapsupp.unl
-gmapsupp.img

when I plug USB into unit and go to Maps, settings, about and then click UPDATE, all its does is write to USB the device info. I am expecting it to start updating the unit. So where am I going wrong? I am sorry if this a repetition of the question

Hi! Capitano! I am a litle bit confused ! If you can see the directories with the USB on your device you may copy all the new files that you downloaded from City Navigator 2016.20 in the same directories like the previous ones meaning (in \Garmin the gmapsupp.img (or gmapprom.img) and in the .jcv and .asr the other files).
In case you use a USB memory stick then you have to follow my previous instructions !
Your device should be in massive storage
it is starting reading the device take few seconds... if it is note recognised repeat again then you go to navigation mode go to Settings\System\About\Update Map and it will ask you if you want to continue say yes and it will take few minutes maybe 10-15. when finished take off your usb and should be ok if you want go to navigation settings\Map\About and see what map is installed.
Just sometimes it is not recognized and should be repeated ..

By "massive storage'' you mean mass storage right? In the \Garmin folder it should appear like this
gmapsupp.img
jcv( the jcv files)
asr( all the other files)

sorry, I am a newbie to this side of things.

@Capitano Yes fully right it should work ! Sorry but i don't have such a device to check all this procedure but according to specialists the only problem is that some times you should retry because it is not recognize immediately.

I have done what you have said, and the system says the map update is not compatible with your device. I had the files set up like this (everything is in the main garmin folder)

garmin
-gmapsupp.img
-jcv(has the jcv file)
-asr(asr files, SRX file, g2s file and database file)

You have also to upgrade to the last firmware

Yes I believe you have done correct please try also with 2017.10 NT and just one question! Did you ever tried to connect directly a PC to the USB of your device and copy the files? Just per curiosity?

I only tried using the male to male USB cable. The PC didn't do anything i.e. show the Kenwood as a mass storage device. I was led to believe that I can solder a cable to the unit so I can connect to PC.
Also is the gmap3d.img needed and the G2s folder too?

The gmap3d.img is necessary if your device support 3D Building images (i don't know if yours do).

If you manage to connect your device in a PC and see the directories on it it could be easier!

Just have in mind that in some devices the .img maps are installed in a hidden directory named .system

Please, Keep us informed about.
