I an updating a couple of 1490's, both with 8Gb SD cards.
I have both the 2018.20 img file, and it's piece parts (JCV, etc.) as well as the "City Navigator North America NT 2018.20.gmap" folder structure.
I understand how to make use of the img file. But I can't find how to use the gmap folders. I've seen references to using Mapsource, but last year when I went through this , I understood Mapsource was deprecated and replaced with Basecamp?
Since that folder structure is still being published, I assume there is value in using it and I'd like to understand how? Can anyone point me to a relevant tutorial or thread explaining how to use it?

I gather it (the gmap folders) can also be used in Basecamp. I did get Basecamp to "see" the new map by placing a shortcut to them in the right spot, but it says it's locked.
Most of the links I found to the unlocking stuff appear to be broken or outdated. I didn't have any luck unlocking it
Not a huge deal to not have the map in Basecamp (because I've been trying a different route generation tool anyway lately), but it would be nice.
Again, grateful for any pointers.

Duh. Think I found it right under my nose here...

Went to end of thread for lastest version in thread (Got "UnLock MapSource.exe" ver 5.2 at time of this post).
I think I answered my own question. One can:
a) Copy img file to the device or SD card
OR
b)
get the gmap folder and files
unlock them per above
move or put a shorcut to c:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps
Open Basecamp and select the maps, worked.
Install maps to device from Basecamp if desired.
Right? Any other reason to get the folder structure instead of the img?

Hi! as you said you answered alone on your question this way of Basecamp is usefull if you want to install part of the areas of the big map on a device.

Thank you. I had done that (a smaller area) in the past, didn't remember how. I understand now. I bit the bullet and picked up a couple 8G SD cards for the 1490's so less of an issue now. But good to know, thanks again.
