GPS navigation is bad on the newer CityNavigator maps

Postby beanbaby » Sun Apr 06, 2025 4:53 am

Hi. I have a Garmin Nuvi 2595LM/T, with firmware 8.30 and the most recent City Navigator map: 2026.10. The problem I am running into is the navigation of the GPS. I had this problem since like the 2020.xx version of City Navigator where for this model of Garmin 2595 - I live in NYC the GPS navigation seems to take me off the highway on a route, drive on the service road then direct me back on the highway. ... there is no like direct navigation to avoid this fiasco. This happens whether I take off the faster time, short distance, and avoid custom area or disable traffic trend settings. I even tried to use BaseCamp to define the route and seems the CityNavigator map in itself is defining the route. What is puzzling is when I changed from RV / Car, seems the RV profile gives the direct navigation without having me get off the highway and then come back in. But, when I download the route to GPS and use Trip Planner for route navigation it overrides the planned route, expect when I turn off auto calc, but this defeats the purpose of having to constantly flip the setting back and forth to get the GPS to go with the route I want. But, what I dont understand is I have another model 2795 and this navigation behaviour is not apparent in this 2795 model, although the choice of navigation route sucks compare to google maps. BaseCamp route calc seems to differ from the GPS calc. I call Garmin to complaint they told me the ROM is the only difference in the way the same version of map is installed in the 2 different GPS that give different instructions. The 2795 seems more direct. I actually changed the 2595 ROM from 8.3 to 8.2 and same navigation issue. I have one 2595 with an outdated map like 2016.xx and seems this map although old has the more direct routing. Would you be able to help me, do you have a collection of unlocked City Navigator from 2017 - 2023 for me to test whatever is the latest map version that I can keep on my GPS for the direct navigation?

Hello,

A few years ago, I had the same problem with a Nüvi 2598.
I contacted Garmin support and they told me to reset the device to the factory parameters and .. it worked.

May be you can try it !

Garmin has this article (see below) on Navigational issues, followed the instructions and does not work on older Garmin Nuvi 2595LM/T. Even on the newer devices, Garmin navigation (regardless of setting: faster time, shorter distance, fuel, etc) takes the "scenic route." I think what we need is a map engineer to understand the algo in route routing. Even using the route planner in BaseCamp using North America 2026.10, I see the same route as the GPS 2595 route - sub par route. On the other Garmin 2795 GPS, seems the BaseCamp suboptimal route, using the same start / destination is "line of sight" on the 2597 -the optimal route expected.... So, I'm not sure what drives the GPS routing. What's more challenging is seems, tickering with the settings: faster time, shorter distance / fuel for each route might have a slight different outcome, still not optimal "line of sight route." Also, downloading a route from BaseCamp to the Garmin 2595, seems the GPS "overrides" the route unless I set to "off road routing" ... This is puzzling why the GPS would override a planned route, Takes people off a highway, drive local then back on highway - makes NO sense. The ideal GPS map is google.com - unfortunately, they dont make a GPS or get a google map to a Garmin

i think the last CityNavigator map version that worked on my 2595LMT before the driving in circle routing instructions were 2021.10 - 2023.10 maps. Would you have the maps from 2021.10 - 2023.10 ? But I always installed and updated maps via GarminExpress, so not sure *.gma, *.unl files and ASR folder, etc. - if those need to be downgraded to use an older map - pls let me know as I am new to this.
Hi GarminNuvi.

Was wondering if you can help me. As I contacted you a few weeks ago. I have a Nuvi 2595LMT with new map 2026.10 (NA- USA & Mexico) - updated maps via official GarminExpress. I want to rollback to v. 2021.10. Seems the 2021.10 maps is not avail for download anymore. Do you have the 1 map file (NA - USA & Canada) and the relevant .System folder files to help me rollback?

Moved from City Navigator North America NT 2021.10 FID 8420

Postby beanbaby » Fri Apr 18, 2025 11:59 pm

Hello All. Does anyone still have City Navigator 2021.10 - North America (USA, Mexico, Canada) map in 1 img file, plus the relevant system files. I need this for my Nuvi 2595 LMT, seems this is the only map version before 2023.10 which gives routing directions in NYC without driving around in circles (getting off highway, driving on local road, then back on the highway - or getting off the highway, drive on parkway then back on the same highway).....

Hello. How do I put multiple maps onto a Garmin 2595LMT w/ SD card? I have an unlocked (using gimgunlock) City Navigator 2021.10 NA map that I want to put in conjunction to the current 2026.10 map. The 2026.10 map is big so GarminExpress installed parts on the SD card. The SD card is 32FG, FAT32. I tried to copy the 2021.10 unlocked map as "gmapsupp.img" toe the \Map folder on SD card. The GPS does not see the 2021.10 map on map list? What step am I missing?

The maps have the same part number your device won't show anything than the latest version of the same map.

I have a 2595LMT device, due to the still persistent not optimal map routing issues on map City Navigator 2026.10 (problem since 2021.20) in which driving in NYC, the routes tend to have me jump off a major highway, drive on service road for like 2 exits or get on another parkway then back on the same highway. I was thinking of making a solution to fix this driving in circle matter. So, I want to use map 2021.10 for driving around NYC and the tri-state areas, then switching over to 2026.10 for driving when I'm in other states outside NY, NJ, CT.

To try to make do of what I want, I did the following: (1) 2595LMT unit - I unlocked the 2021.10 map using gimpunlock, delete off all the *.gma, *.unl fles on the GPS internal memory. I copied the unlocked 2021.10 as "gmapprom.img" to .\System folder. Booted up GPS and 2021.10 shows on maps list - working fine.

Next, I on the SD card \Map folder.... I added 2026.10 (Canda & Maxico) - gmapsupp.img / 2026.10 (USA) - gmapsupp2.img... booted up GPS and map list only shows both 2026.10.... To get the 2021.10 map to show, I have to eject the SD card (but don't have the 2026.10 maps as they are on SD card). Next, I tried to copy the 2021.10 unlocked map to the SD card (as gmapsupp3.img or 202110.img) and also unlocked South America 2025.10 map (SA 202510.img) to the SD card...... w/ SD card in GPS, booted up the GPS, and Map list only shows 3 maps: 2026.10-US; 2026.10-Canada, Mexico; 2025.10 South America.... is there a way to also get the 2021.10 map to show on the map list as the 4th map? Perhaps modified the *.xml file? I prefer to have all 4 maps to show up on the map list so that I can choose map. How?

Besides, \MAP folder, do I also need to make a JCV, SID, ASR, SQLite folder in \Garmin and copy across the relevant files to the SD card for each map? I make and copy each of these folders on the SD card? Or some go on the GPS memory? Which ones? What is purpose of ASR and SID, SQLite folders?
