GPS navigation is bad on the newer CityNavigator maps

Postby beanbaby » Sun Apr 06, 2025 4:53 am

Hi. I have a Garmin Nuvi 2595LM/T, with firmware 8.30 and the most recent City Navigator map: 2026.10. The problem I am running into is the navigation of the GPS. I had this problem since like the 2020.xx version of City Navigator where for this model of Garmin 2595 - I live in NYC the GPS navigation seems to take me off the highway on a route, drive on the service road then direct me back on the highway. ... there is no like direct navigation to avoid this fiasco. This happens whether I take off the faster time, short distance, and avoid custom area or disable traffic trend settings. I even tried to use BaseCamp to define the route and seems the CityNavigator map in itself is defining the route. What is puzzling is when I changed from RV / Car, seems the RV profile gives the direct navigation without having me get off the highway and then come back in. But, when I download the route to GPS and use Trip Planner for route navigation it overrides the planned route, expect when I turn off auto calc, but this defeats the purpose of having to constantly flip the setting back and forth to get the GPS to go with the route I want. But, what I dont understand is I have another model 2795 and this navigation behaviour is not apparent in this 2795 model, although the choice of navigation route sucks compare to google maps. BaseCamp route calc seems to differ from the GPS calc. I call Garmin to complaint they told me the ROM is the only difference in the way the same version of map is installed in the 2 different GPS that give different instructions. The 2795 seems more direct. I actually changed the 2595 ROM from 8.3 to 8.2 and same navigation issue. I have one 2595 with an outdated map like 2016.xx and seems this map although old has the more direct routing. Would you be able to help me, do you have a collection of unlocked City Navigator from 2017 - 2023 for me to test whatever is the latest map version that I can keep on my GPS for the direct navigation?

Hello,

A few years ago, I had the same problem with a Nüvi 2598.
I contacted Garmin support and they told me to reset the device to the factory parameters and .. it worked.

May be you can try it !

Garmin has this article (see below) on Navigational issues, followed the instructions and does not work on older Garmin Nuvi 2595LM/T. Even on the newer devices, Garmin navigation (regardless of setting: faster time, shorter distance, fuel, etc) takes the "scenic route." I think what we need is a map engineer to understand the algo in route routing. Even using the route planner in BaseCamp using North America 2026.10, I see the same route as the GPS 2595 route - sub par route. On the other Garmin 2795 GPS, seems the BaseCamp suboptimal route, using the same start / destination is "line of sight" on the 2597 -the optimal route expected.... So, I'm not sure what drives the GPS routing. What's more challenging is seems, tickering with the settings: faster time, shorter distance / fuel for each route might have a slight different outcome, still not optimal "line of sight route." Also, downloading a route from BaseCamp to the Garmin 2595, seems the GPS "overrides" the route unless I set to "off road routing" ... This is puzzling why the GPS would override a planned route, Takes people off a highway, drive local then back on highway - makes NO sense. The ideal GPS map is google.com - unfortunately, they dont make a GPS or get a google map to a Garmin
