the model is a garmin e trek vista c he's had it a couple of years with maps on it , its started to come up cant unlock map, he cant still use it on the blank screen mode to provide his track up a route then him follow it back on his return but it doesn't overlay the map its using software version 2.70

I do not understand what you mean with this...

when i switch it on it comes up "can not unlock map", even thought the map has run fine for the last few years, the device still works, and as you walk it give you a track of your route on the screen, but not on the map its just a blank background

What is map, and is there unl file for it if map is gmapsupp.img there must be file named gmapsupp.unl too. see your garmin device \garmin folder
