Many questions from a novice

Mon Jan 30, 2012 5:24 pm

Hello,

i'm a new Montana 650 owner and i have many questions about this device and use.
I would like to plan road and offroad (4x4)trips in Europe and others. Also hiking in France, Spain,...
So, i'll ask my questions in a telegraphical style :
- how to download maps and install them on my device ?
- wich type of file must i download ?
- wich software do i have to use to install them and make a trace and trip planning on my computer before putting them on the device?
- does any good software exist on MAC ?

I'll certainly have many more questions later.

Thank you for your help.

You can use all kinds of available maps on your device: street maps (e.g. City Navigator), topographic maps and sea maps (BlueChart). For your device you have to use "image" versions (file name *.img). For trip planning on PC you must use "MapSource" versions, also called CD or DVD version or gmap. If available you should download "unlocked" maps - they are easier to handle for newbies. The actual program for trip planning is Garmin BaseCamp - free available for Windows and Mac OS.

Here you find all Garmin-Software for Windows [Please Register or Login to download file]
...and for Mac [Please Register or Login to download file]

These are the basics in a few words. If you have special questions for installation and using of maps or other things, please ask specially.
