Monolingual & Topo

I know you shouldn't ask two questions at once as you'll probably get the answer to the one less important but here goes.

1) In a Nuvi 255w, can I sanitize the Voice directory and get rid of Ancient Aramaic, Middle Kingdom hieroglyphic (modern) etc. to save space and just keep the language I am interested in? I assume that will speed it up and also free up oodles of space.

2) According to what I've read, the Nuvi255w supports up to 5 file names + 1 in the SD card. So if for example I want to add a topo map, can I just name it one of the unused filenames? If so how will it recognize it's a topo map, or it just sees another map and checks the header to see what it is?

TIA

  1. Of course you can remove unused language files, to save space but I think it wouldn't speed up your nuvi - only start could be faster.

  2. On your generation of nuvi only the gmap*.img names possible, individual map names only at newer devices accepted (e.g. 12xx, 13xx...). To make a distinction different maps on older devices in the file list I made small txt files with the real name e.g. gmapprom-CNEU2012-3.txt, gmapsupp-Topo_D2010.txt...

Yes I meant faster start-up not actually speed up the unit.

As to the file names, here is where I got that from:

3763

So you're saying that I can only use the alternate map set (if not used) gmapprom1.img as the name for my topo map?

If you have only 2 maps, you'd best use gmapprom.img and gmapsupp.img - the other names are not supported by all devices.

But gmapsupp can be in both the SD card as well as internal correct?

correct

so you can always have 3 maps (except basemap) - 2 internal, 1 external
