Mon Jan 02, 2023 11:21 pm

Hi all,
I have a Montana 700 , think i have worked out most things, however i cannot seem to get the Tide app to work. You select where to then tides , i get a message on screen No results found try adjusting search parameters , i search for a town near the coast and get same message. How do i use this feature correctly ?

Another question sorry, while navigating my unit does not give the street names is there a TTS voice available for the Montana 700 series ?

Transfering Route From Basecamp to Montana 700

Wed Jan 11, 2023 6:36 pm

Hi all,
I have created a route in base camp to take me from Kent To Dartmoor via the M4 M5 route not the A303. I transfer the route with the Profile as Driving and the Gps unit will not read it, i transfer the same route with the profile as Direct Routing and the Gps unit will open it ask me what activity, unless i am already in the Driving profile and will then recalculate the route. Is this normal ? Should i be able to leave the route profile as driving ?

Any tips appreciated

Lee

I'm pretty sure Garmin have disabled Car/Motorbike/ATV routing on purpose when using the Garmin supplied TopoActive maps in the 7XX series devices.
It could be something to do with that, or it could even a bug.

My solution to it not routing when I found out they'd deliberately disabled it in some instances was to load the Open Street Maps and use them instead, they're better than the Garmin maps for where I live and are updated more regularly.
I seem to remember some of the 'deliberately disabled' issues being activity related also, I have mine set on the Hiking activity and things that wouldn't work on others seem to work.

....

On another note, after much communication with Garmin and much testing, the issue I was having with the map freezing and not showing movement until a certain speed was reached has been fixed with firmware updates.
The 276CX also had this same freezing issue and Garmin, to their credit, fixed it with a firmware update also.

Still no solution to the encrypted firmware that I know of :004:

Thanks for the reply,

I am currently using the OSM like you, in my area there bang up to date and updated weekly. I set the route with Basecamp i set the profile to driving and send it to the GPS . I disconect the GPS and start it up. When i go to where to select route, find the route and click go. The gps then returns to the map view saying ready to navigate at the top. If i do the same except when creating route i leave it to direct routing profile, the gps will then ask me which activity and then recalculates the route . My old Montana 650 never had this issue. I also had TTS voices and i was able to use other maps, none of which i can do with the new 700 model , seems a massive step back to me !

I can use other maps with mine but not locked maps that have been unlocked.
The encrypted firmware used on the new devices seems to put a stop to that.
On the whole I'm pretty disappointed with my 700 also, to the point I probably won't buy another product from Garmin, considering the troubles I've had with mine and all the bugs they come with I believe they are way too expensive.
The 700 is great for some things, and I do still use it occasionally.
But the poor quality of the display in night mode and the fact that I've since discovered the battery icon sometimes shows as "too hot to charge" when plugged into a powered cradle and the device is being used when the outside temps are less than 20 degrees C.
Both in a car and on a motorbike this has been a real issue for me.
The battery icon turns orange when this happens and it will not accept charge, twice now it's shut itself down on me from a lack of power in an unknown city when I really needed it to work, and both times the weather wasn't hot.
I've gone back to my using Montana 610 when in an area I don't know and haven't had a problem since.
