Updating garmin maps on Kenwood DNX head units

Postby mtlbrad » Mon Apr 25, 2011 5:18 pm

Hi,

Has anyone updated their kenwood head units in their car? I am not sure what you would do to get the updates working on a USB stick so you can update the maps inside. Anyone have any instructions on what to do for updating kenwood DNX series car units? Thanks...

looking to update to city navigator 2011 11.30+ maps north america

Can you do it through a laptop?

Like mb23 wrote the procedure depends from the model of the unit you use. There are three different cases when it comes to update the maps in Kenwood units. Starting from the SD card behind unit's display screen like DNX7200, or models like DDX 6029 with KNA G520, in this case the SD card is inside Garmin's KNA G520 unit. In both cases you can copy the map inside a Garmin folder in the SD and create the serial number using device's UnitID & map's FID when it comes to the first case, or copy an already unlocked map when it comes to a KNA G520 unit. There are also models with no SD card like DNX5240 BT. In that case you have to connect the unit to a laptop using miniUSB port located at the back end of the unit (if you don't know how to access go to a Kenwood authorized dealer to connect permanently a miniUSB to USB cable). You have to install Garmin's drivers to your laptop first, then connect miniUSB to USB cable, select "mass storage mode" and before doing anything make a backup, then start copying or replacing files. This method can be used to devices like DNX7200 or DDX 6029 if we want not only to add maps in SD but change those in the internal memory also...

Ι have tried myself the procedure with KNA G520, all the other info comes from Kenwood users ...

I'm glad that it worked for you, and I also hope what you meant to say is "maps would only work when saved as "gmapsupp.img"" instead of "... saved as .supp". This clarification only serves to eliminate confusion for others. Peace! :)

Hello,
I have a DNX7200.
It works with a standard generated locked mapsupp.img file in combination with an unlock file mapsupp.unl.
Locking maps and generating the .unl unlock code kan be done with the jetmouse keygen.
Use patched mapsource or mainstall versions.

please be aware that unlocked files do not work on a DNX 7200.
I just installed the latest generated 2012.20 Europe NT maps.

hello Blek

I think that DNX7200 can take only 2 map-files in head unit.
gmapsupp.img and gmapprom.img
not success with files like gmapprom1.img , or gmapoem.img

its correct???

Currently installed Europe with some lands removed to keep image below 2 GB, on a 4 GB sdhc card.
With large file size the map can be displayed, however navigation does not work.
I installed Europe 2012.30 with locked maps (gmapsupp.img) and unlock code in gmapsupp.unl, both plave on sd in submap garmin.
Works great.
Regards, Henk

It's been my experience that even using unlocked.img maps on my WinCE Mio C320 for my Mobile XT, I still use JM Keygen to create an .unl. Works fine for me. It may be unnecessary but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Please do NOT post any thanks. Simply press the hand icon with the "thumb up" which is the thank you button.
