G2 Vision - Locked or Unlocked? What's the difference pleas

Postby wahoo » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:40 pm

Hi all, my first post....

Can someone please explain the difference between a locked G2 Vision map and an unlocked one? I have recently purchased a chartplotter with the EU001R (english channel) map for my boat. I have also just purchased and installed Garmin's 'HomePort' Software (and just realised I could d/l from within this site for free! ) and I can view the maps from my card (only fishing chart and nav chart view) on my pc now. Can anyone tell me why I cant view any of the 3d views please (like I can on my chartplotter) on the pc?

Am I correct in assuming that a locked map will only work on a gps that it has been assigned too whereas an unlocked map will work on any gps that is capable of reading a G2 Map?

I've noticed that there are links to maps within this site. Some folk are requesting locked maps and others unlocked maps? Why is this?

Sorry for so many Q's.

Regards.

HomePort can display locked and unlocked maps. But HomePort can only display the navigation chart, the fishing chart, the harbour photos and the tide grafiks - all other features of G2Vision maps are not (yet) supported.

On any devices you can only use maps that unlocked for your device or for SD-card (like originally Garmin maps) or generally unlocked maps which you find here.

Thanks for your prompt reply. So, I can use my original garmin SD card on ANY compatible Garmin device i.e if I decide I no longer want the map and choose to sell it on? If you can only use maps that are unlocked to a specific device, why then are people looking for 'locked' maps?

Thank you!

Yes, original Garmin maps on SD-card can work in every compatible device, because they are unlocked with the hardware ID of the SD-card. But you can't copy the map from this SD to use it on another SD, only if you unlock it with KeyGen for another device or with Unlocker generally.

I can only speculate why some people looking for locked maps. There are many unlockers in the circulation and some of them are to old or not so good, so that some unlocked maps don't work properly. I think, therefore some people unlock the maps rather themselves.
