i have an old silverguide navigator 4000 320x240
running Primo.2 - 9.6.5.
runs really nice, everything works a treat, Apart from the Backlight Goes Dim when no user input after a min or two, and have to touch the screen and click back a screen
especially on the motorway, its a bit too dim and cant see the lane signpost info
can anyone help with this
here's my sys.txt if its any help, i have the power/backlight items edited out, because i dont know what they are for, maybe i need to use one of those ?

Does the device itself have any backlight/power controls in a menu of it's own?
If so, this may over-ride any settings within a particular program.
If there is such a menu for the device, either disable any changes or set the timeout to the maximum possible.

it has a myguide menu
all the primo, amgo software runs from a Addons.txt
this puts the .exe icons on the mygude menu
i then click the icon to run primo, igo, amigo or whatever
the Myguide menu only has time, Date, Align-screen, Lang, Volume, Brightness, and Turn Of after 10mins-30mins-never etc, which is set to never turn off anyway
so it dont cause any problems, or never has before
this myguide menu dont seem to normally interfere with anything, ive not had any problems with igo8, igo8.3, amigo or anything run previously
since running this latest Primo2 ive run into this backlight time out
on primo2 i have the extra settings on and the backlight setting is ticked which i think puts the added settings onto the normal settings, which give sliders for the backlights
but i dont see any timeout setting anywhere

is there any way to force the backlight to play ball using the sys.txt

Can you access the wince control panel?

Backlight control on windows ce is a mess, every device does it a different way.
Once I manually tried every possible "backlight_methods" from 1 to 99, and I found the value for igo 8 (don't remember which one). That's a painstaking process, since you have to restart igo each time you change sys.txt.
When I upgraded to primo the same number didn't work, so I repeated the process with no luck. Eventually I had to write my own dll, which unfortunately won't work on any other device.
@racky29, you could arm yourself with patience and do the same (trying all the "backlight_methods" value I mean, not writing a dll), unless somebody has your same device and already knows the correct number.
Edit: and that's not all, once you find the correct backlight_methods, you'll have to find the backlight_min and backlight_max. Start with a high value with max, let's say 100, then try the backlight slider in primo, and note the point which it doesn't get more brightness. Let's say is at about 1/3, so change the max to 30 and try again, and so on and so forth, until you can be sure that the extremes of the slider match the minimum and maximum brightness.

i havent tried the WinCE Control panel
because it starts up with a Myguide Menu and i can succesfully run anything from the SD Card using the addons.txt, i havent needed to mess around with anything
is been a trusty old satnav since 2006
but thanks for you replys, ill have to play around a little i suppose

i added a few more commands to sys.txt, enabled some and disabled some
and it seems to have stopped the timeout issue i had
although i'm not sure why it it has looking at these commands
i'll have to test it some more before confirming it's worked for sure
but just been out for a run with the sat nav and all seems well so far
this is what ive got in sys.txt anyway
- Code:
[power]
backlight_sync_with_OS="0"
backlight_slow_api="0"
backlight_day="85"
backlight_night="75"
backlight_day_battery="81"
backlight_night_battery="73"
backlight_manage_values="1"
backlight_manage_keys="1"
;backlight_max=10"
;backlight_min="1"
;backlight_methods="39"
;backlight_reverse="0"
;backlight_key_timeout_ba="BatteryTimeout"
;backlight_key_timeout_ac="ACTimeout"
;backlight_key_ontap_ba="BacklightOnTap"
;backlight_key_ontap_ac="ACBacklightOnTap"
;backlight_key_on_ba="OnOff"
;backlight_key_on_ac="ExtOnOff"
backlight_events="1"
powermgm_state="1"

To get access to the wince control panel set one of the items in addon.txt to point to...
\windows\control.exe
Go into either backlight or power settings, (I forget which one they're in) and adjust all the timeouts to never

the previous post i said it was sorted, but it wasn't, it was because it don't do it while its charging
but i think iv'e sorted it for sure now
iv'e had a look through the Data.zip it's a multi res data.zip, it appears there's some default power settings running from there that seems this could be the issue
it has this command set
powermgm_state="1"
this seems to set the timeout to 30 seconds
so i set my sys.txt to
powermgm_state="0"
that seems to have done it
in the control panel
backlight settings - just a slider, nothing else to set
display settings - has two time out options to set as you wish, Nothing is Set or Ticked to do with timeout
so nothing in the control panel to help me
just if anyones interested, i found the Backlight_max setting that works
backlight_max="30000"
30000 works, but im not sure it gives 100% Brightness, matbe its even higher than 30000
anyway all's well, im happy, and ive learned a few things in the process
thanks for your replies, they helped me to help myself.

What's in the control panel is entirely dependent on what the manufacturer puts in there, but if the settings were there it would have been the easier option.
