and if my battery dies at some point,

what can i do?

Same as with any other device : open it ,check the battery type and order a replacement on Ebay.

As long as the battery is in the unit and the battery is NOT shorted then YES. Typically, you cannot run the GPS without the battery, the GPS draws more current than the charging current provided by the battery charger. BTW, this is true with most devices that run on rechargeable batteries.
