I have a route made up in my sat nav for when I go to Germany. I would not bother with a route just set a destination but I need to make a detour. Having never done this before or seen the function working what does the sat nav do when I reach the detour? Do I touch an arrive button to it can plot the rest of my route. Just thinking ahead here and don't want to be pressing the wrong thing and deleting my route

Telling you its igo8 might help

Instead of making it a detour, set up the detour location as a waypoint and then the program should continue to its final destination - I hope.
Creating a multi-point
route (inserting a via point)
Multi-point routes are created from simple routes, so
a route must be active first. One of the ways of
expanding the route is to keep the destination,
and to add via points (intermediate destinations).
This feature is available in Advanced mode only.
1. Select a new location as you did in the
previous sections. This will be the additional destination
in the route.
2. The map appears with the selected point
in the middle, and the Cursor menu opens
automatically.
3. Tap insert as via to add the point as an intermediate destination preceding the final
destination of the route.
4. [optional] To add more points to the route,
repeat the above steps as many times as you like.
If you insert a via point in a route that is already
a multi-point route, you
will automatically be taken to
the Edit Route screen where you can determine the
position of the intermediate route point. When
you enter the screen, the new via point is placed as
the last via point before the final destination. The
new point is the selected point in the list.

Good one, ill give that a go later tonight Chas. I was looking for something simple in the menu like insert waypoint or whatever so I just plotted a rout using the Tyre software and transferred the KML file over. I would do a simulation but its over a few hundred miles

IGO says "arrived at via point" or similar, depending on the voice and language. That is it.
And if you set up a short route, nearby, add a via point, demo works just as well as a long route

Cool its just a voice message. Cant go wrong then. I tend to have the volume on silent as having a wife one woman telling me what to do is enough. Even my car tells me when I am speeding

As Chas said you can do a waypoint, however if you already know the route to your detour, you could always just mute the sat nav and ignore it, allowing it to re-create a fresh route from your detour. If you want to include the detour, it might be easier to simple go straight to your detour using the sat nav, then set the route to your final destination. This really isn't any different to what Chas said though

I set multi-waypoint routes all the time (on primo), it just directs you to the waypoint, says "you have reached a waypoint on the left/right" then immediately continues with the rest of the route without any user interaction.

But do you have to stop? I've noticed that iGo sometimes expects you to stop at a waypoint.

Nope, as long as you drive over the waypoint and it's not in a side street or off the road.

I can confirm what FBF wrote, I used that last month in Slovenia. No need to stop nor any user interaction, if you drive over it.
