My first impression of Igo Primo

Wed Jan 11, 2012 1:41 pm

First of all a big thank you to those that contribute on here. In the past couple of weeks I've moved from IGO 8 that was supplied on a double din unit I purchased for my Ford Focus to Primo 2.0. And it works well.

I'm not a novice with playing about with Sat Nav devices. I've had a TomTom one for years and had to happily working with the latest Navcore, maps, guidance etc.

So the primo has been a pleasant endulgance much to the wifes disgust.

At the bottom of my post is my current SYS.TXT created by SysConfugurator. yes it is big, very big and I am sure can be cut down. But it works with my unit and there are no performance issues (well TTS speedcam has stopped working recently that's all). When I went for a very minimal SYS.TXT I found that for some reasons my preferred colour scheme didn't display the colours correctly so I left it as it is.

So what do I think of primo over Tomtom

plus points - better display especially things like the buildings
- it's very configurable (but see minus points)

minus points - not enough documentation to know what all the parameters do
- not enough colour options - I'm in the UK and want blue motorways, green roads etc etc
- map updates not as forthcoming

Overall I prefer it over TomTom.

Don't know whether to try some of the other packages like Garmin though.

Yeah it's big. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it! BTW, Garmin has no TTS.

Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:06 pm

Eventually you may have some issue. Whether it's difficulty installing a skin, problems with getting some change you made within the program interface to stick upon restart, issues with TTS (which you already have), or any of 1000 different things. And a lot of time will be wasted trying to help you resolve these issues yet to come simply because of your sys.txt. SysTextConfigurator is not fully compatible with Primo 2. At least not yet. And you have created a spiders web of possible trouble.
Here is just one example:
[dynamiccompressor]
a0="56806"
compressor="1"
gain="12"
ratio="8"
thrs="24703"

That entire section does no good at all (and may create issues) if used with native Primo 1.2 or 2.0 Nuance voices.

But to each his own, I guess.
By the way, there are many color schemes available to use with Primo other than just the few that came with it.
Search Google using "igo primo color schemes" and you will find many sites with many options. Not all may be fully '2.0 compatible', but if not, it's usually easy to change back away from them. You may find one with the road colors you prefer, or if you do further research, find tools and advice on how to modify existing schemes or make your own.

Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:30 pm

i agree with the replies. Small is best. Quite a lot of it is taken up with the speedcams (which i use) and is repeated in each section.

I hark back to the lack of documentaion about each option. and what it does.

Y.T. - I respect your knowledge on this subject. I'll start by removing the [dynamiccompressor] section and a few other things as well

Thu Jan 12, 2012 7:33 am

I've taken the advice and gone minimalistic. Removed just about everything from the SYS.TXT file (except all those speed camares). Works fine. Little niggle is the sound doesn't seem as loud and the buildings aren't as prominent (I know that there are parameters regarding this). Buty will live with the new cut down version. Cheers for all your help.

Thu Jan 12, 2012 8:08 am

Glad to see you've come over to the Light Side.
:grouphug:

Regarding your concern about the lack of documentation for sys.txt (which I neglected to respond to), this has always (and will probably remain so) been a concern to some. Even some of the engineers at NNG admit that they do not know all of the possible commands and what they do exactly. It's sort of like the Windows Registry..it has grown so much over the years, that almost nobody understands it all or has taken the time to document the whole thing.
But one of the main things to consider is that, if you don't know what a particular sys.txt entry actually does, it's best not to use it.
Lots of people here know lots about sys.txt..sometimes through trial and error..and will be happy to help you, but nobody here knows it all.
Modifications to sys.txt should revolve around trying to solve or correct specific issues..not to make it into a book by including everything.
