Format for Loading Pic

Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:12 pm

Does iGo8.3 support other formats(i.e. JPG...) than BMP for the loading picture of 8xx by 4xx? TIA

No

Just use Vueprint ( [Please Register or Login to download file] ) to re size and re save in the format and size required. (free prog)

But the name of the file can be anything right? It doesn't have to be loading.bmp?

Thanx for the heads up re. Vueprint!

Ok, I'm a bit lost here. I got a JPG image (from the Mac), scaled it to the desired size, saved it with the above program to a BMP (on an XP Dark Side machine), compared it to the initial image I had on the SD card (they're the same - 1.1MB) but the zipped file is 200 megs larger (1.7 for original vs 1.9 for modified) yet when I load it onto the unit it won't display. Name is loading.bmp ... anything I missed here? Everything else, maps etc. loads fine.

Where did you load it?

Image went back in the same directory and folder:

branding\ui_igo8\800_480\loading.bmp

The original bmp picture was not compressed. Entire branding folder was compressed with the utility suggested above with no problems.

Is there a maximum image size? Due to shades etc. some files though BMP (a huge hog) will compress more than others which is why I have a 100k difference in the file sizes between the original bmp that works and mine that doesn't load.

Hmmm, don't think size matters. (for bitmap files ;) )

Try using winRAR, copy "branding.zip" to your PC, open "branding.zip" and find \ui_igo8\$izex$ize (your screen size, sure it is 800x480?) and add "loading.bmp" to the archive overwriting the original "loading.bmp"

Then copy "branding.zip" back to sd card overwriting the originals (but make sure to keep a copy of he original, just in case!!!)

Yep, I'm sure. I went to my neighbor's who's a photographer and we opened them (under Win 7) in the latest Adobe Photoshop and both files are 800x480. The 100k file size difference is the fact that the VW R5 original picture is mostly blue, whilst the picture I am trying to load has a lot of hues and different colors. Thus the first file compresses better than the one I have. But other than that, no difference. I can extract the original and re-zip with the programs I have and the original one works, mine doesn't. Very weird...

OK, here's what I tried.

Unit: Maisun, 800x480 resolution.

1) Took a different JPG from the Mac and copied it over to the XP machine

2) Imported it into VuePrint

3) Changed the format from JPG to BMP setting it to 160dpi and 800x480

4) Saved file

5) Looked at file once again to check it was still BMP and resolution/size etc.

6) Using WinRar I then opened the branding zip container on the SD card and copied the file from the desktop onto the card

7) Double clicked on loading.bmp and checked that it was the correct file and attributes.

8) Ejected the SD card and placed it into the Maisun unit

Load image was bypassed.

If I missed a step please let me know as this is now 3 different JPG images I've tried and ... nothing.

TIA

The loading.bmp (and the exiting.bmp which is often ignored depending on your iGo/Primo version, but you can replace that too, if you like) can be three different places. Depending on a number of factors, it may be necessary to replace all of them (assuming all 3 locations exist on your file system).
1) inside data.zip.....ui_igo8 (for iGo 8x)\ ui_igo9 (for Primo)\{system_resolution}\loading.bmp
2) inside branding.zip (same location as above), and also in {system_resolution}\skin_night\loading.bmp
3) If your system has a ui_igo{8 or 9} folder in the main folder root, then same locations as above.

Basically, you want to replace loading.bmp in ALL the locations it can be found, so that there is no chance any other than the one you want is used.
Be careful when dealing with data.zip and branding.zip files not to completely decompress them, make changes, and then re-zip them. This may render them useless and unable to be read by iGo/Primo. Only work with such files within Winrar by using drag/drop within the Winrar interface. That way, the integrity of the archive is preserved so that iGo/Primo can use it.

Sometimes (not always) it may also be necessary to delete the Save folder after making changes in order for those changes to be seen.

Thank you for your reply. Here are some questions then:

Assuming the file (loading.bmp) exists in other locations in branding.zip, since I didn't touch those, wouldn't the original file then show up if the one I did change doesn't?

I just checked and the loading.bmp as the original file doesn't exist anywhere else in branding.zip. I'll check the other directories...

Data.zip does have a loading.bmp in there but I can't read it with any program I have and it's a 390kb file far from what the other one 1.1MB file is. That's the only one.

When you say drag/drop in WinRar, you mean don't use the Add File?

Thank you for your help!

Yes, probably. If you got no loading screen (picture) at all, it means either something is wrong with your custom loading.bmp, OR you destroyed the *.zip file by unzipping/rezipping.

You don't have to, no. You can just drag the file from your desktop, etc into the folder being displayed in Winrar. If asked whether to overwrite (depending on your Winrar global settings), say "Yes".

For experimentation purposes, try the one attached. It is correct in dimension, color depth, formatting, etc.
If it works, you know you are doing it right, but the image you made is flawed somehow.

Unzip it on your PC, then try to insert it where you want.

PS. A correctly done loading.bmp for 800x480 will ALWAYS be exactly 1.09 MB.

I examined a backup of iGO8 i have, and it appears that the loading.bmp in the data.zip is in compressed format, while the loading.bmp in the branding.zip is not compressed...

To convert between compressed and decompressed i use [Please Register or Login to download file]

If you still get the default startup screen instead of your screen try replacing the screen in the data.zip, but use the tool to compress it first.

Open the bmp image and save as iPAQ 31X/iGO (RLE Bitmap)
