Good GPS suggestions for igo?

Good GPS suggestions for igo?

Postby Navcan » Sat Oct 26, 2013 3:28 pm

I am thinking of buying a second hand or new gps. I thought of getting a Garmin, really dig their traffic models like the 3000 series stuff, but I realize in a couple of years we cant install new maps on it and wont be as flexible overseas as windows ce based stuff like igo primo.

So leaning on the navman side. Anybody got a suggestion for a gps device that can run latest primo 2 with most bells and whistles without any hiccups? :102:

Why not buy one that comes with iGo pre-installed?

I like my Megallan 9020... Used on e bay for around 80 bucks... Giant 7 inch screen, fast... has a micro SD card slot... Runs directly off the card..

I will look up the Megallan 9020, I dont know but that isn't like some crappy Chinese knockoffs, right? I wanted something from a reputable brand.

In Australia-New Zealand region btw. :087:

hows the UNIDEN stuff, like UNIDEN IGO43?

No, in the USA, Megallan is a really popular brand, and stands up well over time.

The Magellan 9020 screen is too dim and it is not all that good. The 9055 is apparently much better.

I've never seen Uniden as anything but cheap and nasty, but I've not used their GPS stuff. I don't think they do anything except buy from China and stick a badge on, do they?

Being Chinese-made is ubiquitous. The quality varies hugely. Something like a Lenovo Thinkpad is second to none. But if you buy the very cheapest you can't expect much, and the chinese do the very cheapest too.

I like navmans (and mio's), just be careful with unlocking.

My old Mio M400 runs Primo 2 with all the extras, same as the Navman S50/F45 etc.

Just avoid the bottom of the range versions as they only have 32MB ram.

Hey fatboy, thanks. I like navmans too, although my friends suggest using Garmin for roads as they have better maps and free local maps, I dont think can install I go on it, which I can use for other countries too! But with a Navman I can unlock it and put igo, so think then I am going to go with a navman S50 ~ S100.

fatboy can you tell me the difference in ram of the S100 and S50? I cant find specification anywhere. Also whats the difference between the S series and F series?

*Sorry I haven't purchased any new GPS devices in quite some time

Garmin's run Linux and can't run anything else, but new maps aren't a problem.

I never had a S100 in my hands but I have had a few S50's, the F series are rebranded moov's (there was an older F series range)

The S50 is getting on a bit in terms of age, you could buy a new mio spirit which is similar in terms of hardware (but wince 6), or a second hand moov, (I have the M400, and use it all day every day)

I have a mio 680 with igo and primo 2 installed and it runs perfectly and runs better in primo 2 than igo 8.

the problem is it does not have a sd card.

I believe the EZY models are Moov's/Spirits rebranded for other regions, We don't have them in my area.

The Moov/Spirit/EZY/MY/The newer Navman F series series are all as far as I know, the same.

All based on the original Navman S series.

Avoid the bottom of the range 3.5" 32MB versions!

Fatboy how do I know if its a 32MB version, its it due to just being bottom range? From what I remember navman runs the same software on all models of a series?

Anyway, what do you think of the NAVMAN 478 MIO ? will it run everything primo? I found one from a person who bought it when he was in UK so can no longer use it in NZ and wants to sell it, I guess I can unlock it and use Igo Primo on it right?

Also how would a NAVMAN 478 MIO go against a Navman S100? which would be the better unit?

A Google search usually turns up the specs, but it's only the lowest model number of the range to avoid, ie, S30, Moov M200 etc.

Really, the hardware is similar, unlocking is the same, just don't go for the higher spec devices with TV tuners etc built in.

TMC can be a pain on devices with SmartST installed, it usually requires more work when unlocking.
