Postby etsai3 » Fri May 04, 2012 2:07 am

Hello. So I ordered a GPS from Chinavasion and it finally arrived today. I already spent 5 hours looking around and trying to understand what I need to do to get GPS to work but to no avail.
I ordered this The Explorer 5 Inch Touchscreen GPS Navigator:
[Please Register or Login to download file]

It is Win CE 6.0 and I think it is iGO8.
Now I would like any suggestion/steps of the what to do. As in do I download a software and the latest available map of California (U.S).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

According to the information in the link, it is indeed WinCE 6, but they also say this:
Chinavasion provides the GPS-enabled hardware only, not the software

So did you already install iGo 8, or is there some reason to think it is already there?
If not, you certainly could install the (older and fully functional) iG0 8, or the newer Primo 2, or just about anything else you want except for TomTom which does not play nice with WinCE6.x.
It does not exactly state the amount of RAM on the unit, but let's assume 64MB which is enough for iGo 8 or a basic install of Primo.
Igo8 here:
:link:
Primo here:
:link:
Then, yes, with any version of iGo (8.x or Primo) you can get maps you need from here:

But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

I believe that iGo 8 is already there because when I plug the GPS to the computer I see two removable disks that are almost full: a 4.04 MB and 1.83 GB (probably the SD card).
And so when I click on the 1.83 GB, there is a folder called iGO8.
I looked further into content --> map--> found some maps that I don't need.

Thanks for the info, no wonder I couldn't get Tomtom stuff to work earlier. I will try Primo and post here if I have any problems on the way. Thank you!

That is likely the 'internal' RAM/ROM drive...you probably don't want to mess with that right now.

Yes, that would likely be the removable SD card, and where any NAV program(s) and maps should be stored.
The easiest way to work with that, and get whatever you want installed, is to actually remove it from the device and work with it directly with a card reader on your PC, if possible....going through the USB connection from the device to the PC is sometimes slower, and errors can occur.

If you need any help, just ask. Any of the MODS here are very knowledgeable and happy to help you get where you want to be.

Curious question. Supposedly after I install Primo, it'll take like 1.35 GB on SD card and this map: http://www.navitotal.com/showthread.php?9775-Help.-New-to-this.&p=78759&posted=1#post78759 which is another 1.2gb won't fit on the SD card then?

I'm assuming you put the the downloaded map into the map folder somewhere.

Not really. The download you are probably looking at contains a slew of TTS voices in a separate folder that you may not need (every language known at this time, and we are not sure..due to an unknown amount of RAM on the device...if TTS voices are for you). TTS (Text To Speech) voices are totally OPTIONAL and you don't need any at all for the program to work just fine.
The program only...all by itself in it's own folder...is only about 230MB +/-...plenty small enough to fit on any 2GB+ SD Card.
The same with any maps you may download...probably ALL maps for a particular continent are included of which you may only need a few depending on where you intend to navigate to regularly. You can copy over JUST the maps you need and therefore not have to worrry too much about space on the SD Card.
And yes, in either iGo8 or Primo, the maps you need go into the {main folder}\Content\Map folder.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Sorry to interfere.

You are saying that a folder called igo8 is present on the sd. When that is correct and was in included by the device:
1. MAKE A BACKUP !!!!!
2. Is there a way to start up the navigation program? A touchable button on screen? Something else? And does igo start? Probably not - since you are asking, but when something, whatever, happens, is there a message?
3. In the igo8 folder should be a .exe file. Explore the folder please. What is the .exe called exactly? igo8.exe? MobileNavigator.exe? Something else? Make a note of it and also note the path to get to it (example /igo8/igo/MobileNavigator.exe). This could be useful later on.
4. inside the igo folder should be a folder called licenses. What files are inside? That file(s) will (a.o.) determine the continent you can drive on (assuming you have a legal programm). If that continent is different than the one you are on, changes are necessary.

@ YT : thanks for calling me an expert ;)

Yes, I totally forgot that. Before you add/subtract/or do anything to your existing SD Card...make a full backup in case something goes horribly wrong. Or better yet, use a totally different and blank SD Card to play with new stuff, if possible.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Hmmm! I would go with iGO8 from here and Navteq maps and TA POIs. But that's me - sound familiar? :rolling:
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Please do NOT post any thanks. Simply press the hand icon with the "thumb up" which is the thank you button.

Sorry to butt in, and I am no expert, but would your device have settings anywhere in the menu so that you can set the "navi path"?

1. Yeah I made a backup.
2. Yeah it started up fine just no maps.
3. It is IGO8.exe
4. The license files are:device.nng and [email protected]

I already replaced it with IGO Primo from Yurbuh's suggestion! Still downloading the map, taking a while!

I'm not sure what you mean but do you mean content-->map? That's what it has.

Hi for now I'll try the iGO Primo since I'm just testing if my gps works. Would the link I posted above for the latest map I want considered "Navteq"?
Also what do you mean by TA POIs? Any links for your suggestions?

Hi,

When you turn the device on, and you get to the menu (navigation, music player, tools etc.), there should be a way of setting the "navi path" (possibly in tools?)
