How do I identify the map maker in my GPS?

Thu May 05, 2011 3:25 pm

I have a Mio C310X and have downloaded maps to it maybe a year ago. I would like to update the maps. How can I find out what brand maps I have, so that I can update them?

Usually (but not always) the map file names will have in them what they are.
For example:
Luxembourg83TA_2010.12_110210.fbl
Luxembourg_NQ_2010.Q4_110210.fbl

TA= Teleatlas
NQ= Navteq

According to a Google search, your Mio c310x probably came originally with Teleatlas maps, but this may depend on where you are and where you bought it.
If you have a 'normal' iGO istallation, you can use either.
If you are unlucky, you may be limited to MIO for any updates--search specific MIO forums or wait for a Mio Guy for that.

I did not get the maps from Mio. An example of one of my map files is: USA_Mississippi.fbl. Maybe that is because the source may have changed it.

I like your name!

If you go to the about screen in your nav programme there will be a "Content" option (Primo) in the pop up menu where you can see what provider/version map you have, In iGO8 it's a "Map" button on the about screen, 2nd page of settings.

In iGO, goto menu - settings - about - maps
where you should get the info. (Country - build - mapmaker + version number)

That worked perfectly! Thanks Nabi. My maps are for the USA & Canada. It is NavNGo iGO8 8.3.2.96054 with the date Jun 25 2009. I would think that I should look for something more up to date. Where should I look, if it would be available? But wait. Now I am confused. Within the "About" screen I selected "Maps" and found for example "United States - Alaska 2009.02 2006 - 2009 Tele Atlas.[090410] Wold that mean that originally I had NavNGo and then I updated to Tele Atlas? :confused:

NavNGo is the maker of iGO, Amigo and Primo. You can either load NavTeq or Teleatlas maps, as long as they are R3.
Latest US and Canada maps are Teleatlas 2010.06 and Navteq 2009.12 (Q4)
Available in our map section: http://www.navitotal.com/showthread.php?5561-NEW-iGO8-R3-Primo-TeleAtlas-2010.09-N.A.%28Canada-Mexico-USA%29
Usually, we advise the Navteq in North America (better coverage overall)

As for the program, if it runs flawlessly on your device, why update?

@RoadnTrail

Pardon me for butting in but experience has shown that Navteq maps are better [for the most part] in NA while TA maps are better in Europe. You might want to consider this. BTW, TA POIs are much better than Navteq POIs and can be used with Navteq map sets.

So, Nabi, you like Navteq for NA. Then you mention "the program" . Would that be "iGO8" for me? That is what I select at the beginning when I am asked.

Yes, the program is in your case igo 8.3.2.96054.
A little remark on the maps. Navteq is used by most Americans/Canadians. They believe it is the best and covers the most roads. However, some states are best covered using TeleAtlas maps. That is: I am told they are. I am living in Europe and really can't say for sure.
