It is possible that only one thing can have control of the sound output at a time--either radio or GPS. But this depends very much on the unit itself, and there may be a way to have both. You will probably have to research that separately or find someone that has an identical unit.
I will keep this thread open for a while longer in case you have more questions, but when everything is done to your liking, the thread should probably be closed.

Glad to see that you finally got it working. You've experienced the main thing to do this. It's called trial and error. Unfortunately, without having the device directly in our hands, we can only give you advice and it's up to you to do the work. Congratulations and enjoy your device. Let us know how you make out and post what you did because someone else might be experiencing your current problem.
