So how do i update my maps and which one do i need?

Postby yamada » Sat Jul 28, 2012 10:12 pm

Hello,

Im realy new to this so i will do my best to explain....im using IGO8 primo and i want to make sure that i use updated maps of europe.
In the maps folder i have files like: United Kingdom_R3_TomTom_2011.12_120102.fbl
For me i can only guess its from 2011 :)
Also with this new primo i see TomTom, my previous version was different...,i think it was..NAVTEQ or something..
anyway, now my maps are called tomtom...

so who can explain what i need to know..:)

Thanks..

iGO (8/Primo) can use mapsets from various providers, In the UK it is Navteq and Teleatlas (Now called Tomtom)

You already have the latest Teleatlas (Tomtom) maps, There are newer Navteq maps available!

To update the maps and other content:

Exit iGO
Delete the old maps (*.fbl)
Copy in the new maps
Restart iGO

That's it!

Yes, you should keep the maps to be from the same provider and release date, otherwise you may run into routing problems.

The newer the maps, the more accurate they can be.
For example, a 3 year old map may be missing newer roads/addresses that a map from this year has.
Also, any roads that have changed due to construction, etc are more likely to be up to date in a newer map.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

In the UK navteq maps contain more roads and new roads are included quicker, but Tomtom maps are more accurate with addresses and speed limits, pick whichever one meets your requirements.

I found that the Tomtom map you have (and which I have as well) was still better than the latest Navteq that was kindly provided on here.

Dunno if the compression is different on the two formats but they (Tomtom and navteq) differ quite a bit with regards to size - Tomtom being quite a bit bigger. Maybe I niaively think that bigger means more data.

What annoys me is that if you have a Tomtom device the map udates come at you thick and fast. There's a a wrongly named road in the Primo Tomtom map leading to my house which is correct on the actual Tomtom device. the roads been there 12+ years so it isn't new.

They built a new dual carriageway near me two years ago, it was in the following edition of the navteq maps, still not in the Tomtom maps, I find that business/retail park and other "off road" roads are included in navteq maps whereas Tomtom maps stop at the entry point.

I usually use Navteq maps, but having just got Primo to run on my smartphone, I tried running the 2012Q1 Navteq maps on the savnav in the car and the 2011Q4 Tomtom maps on the phone, side by side on the same journey to see how they compared.

What a difference! There are more farm tracks marked as private roads on Tomtom, Tomtom has slightly more up-to-date speed limits. But the real eye-opener is that the Tomtom maps directed me along a road that was closed off with bollards at least fifteen years ago. On one journey it told me to turn right or left several times instead of leaving me to follow the main road when a minor road or farm track joined on a bend.

I had intended to run the comparison for a few days, but after just two journeys, it was Ta-Ta TomTom

Nice side by side comparison. Thanks for that. I don't think I have ever seen anyone do such a live real-world test before.
Of course, somebody else, in a different area or region, could have different results.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

I can tell this as a fact:
a few years ago my old - and I mean OLD - TomTom maps (I still had TT soft then) knew streets and numbers where my son's new Garmin with Navteq maps failed brilliantly.
I admit that from time to time iGO+TA/TT maps sent me down farmers roads but disabling "unpaved roads" in settings helped that issue. On the bright side: at least TA/TT knows those roads ;)
