Perhaps someone this notice will be usefull.
My problem with "failed to open file $poi_mapdistant.bmp" was solved very simple. It appeared when POI of restaurants were included. When I disabled these POI, the error message has stopped appearing.

Hi...I've put this folder on my Dropbox [Please Register or Login to download file] ....for me worked on PNI L807, now I can zoom out without that error appearing. I used Winrar 4.01 to copy just poi_mapdistant.bmp in that folder like in previous descriptions. My gps is a 800 X 480 resolution so i took only that file from the 800_400 folder.
