i was wanting to try out the tmc function and was wondering what tmc/rds receiver to buy ?

I have noticed one that i think would work,but i was wanting to ask if anybody had any recommendations for one.

But i noticed on ebay you can buy one that is meant for a tomtom
for less money and was wondering if this would work for Primo
as its just a receiver ..

1) I don't know if the DragonPearl unit would be fully compatible with your device...best to ask the manufacturer.
Although RoyalTek is a good standard chip that would normally work.
Not all USB ports are suitable for access to external devices...it depends how the USB port was wired internally.

2) An external device meant for a TomTom GPS unit has pretty much no chance of working on anything else. TomTom is Linux, your device is WinCE. All TMC chips (internal or external) require a driver or DLL to work. A part made for a TomTom device will probably not have such a driver or DLL for WinCE.

OH, and PS:
Success or failure with TMC in general (assuming a working receiver) will depend on where you are...in Europe or the UK, TMC broadcasts are generally free to receive...in the US or Canada, most are by paid subscription only. Other areas, I don't know.

I'm sure you already knew this, but the online traffic is free, and you don't even need a tmc receiver. But your device must have internet connection some kind of way.

I've been able to get Primo 2 working with online traffic through a mifi connection to the web in my car, but in my motorhome the satnav is built into the stereo and has no way to connect to the web.

So I thought I might try a bluetooth TMC unit. But that still leaves me with a need to make a serial port of a bluetooth connection. Has anyone managed this? Am I wasting my time trying?

No.
Two different things.
The key thing: FM [color="#FF0000"]transmitter[/color]. Transmitters do not receive.
Although the TMC signals piggy-back on FM broadcasts, they are not 'decoded' to display without a TMC chip involved.
The other thing is, for TMC to work effectively, FM frequencies have to be scanned constantly for updates or if you travel outside one range and into another.

Maybe I wasn't being clear enough. I have a (presumably working) TMC receiver that has a bluetooth transmitter built in. I have a stereo with bluetooth abilities as well as running Primo on Windows CE6.

My problem is getting a way to run a bluetooth serial port adapter program. I don't have direct access to the CE shell or the command prompt.

I think you were clear enough..for me and probably others. But I just don't know how to do what you want (and maybe nobody else does either).
If somebody does, they will probably see this thread and reply.

My feeling is that you are going to run into port conflicts between GPS, TMC, and Bluetooth no matter what.
Which then would mean you might need to run a port splitter, and that adds more complexity and possibility of error.

Write which BT TMC device do you have, which protocol it use ? Do you have working connection BT TMC with BT of your PNA ? Firstly, use IGO8, it has built-in AUTO scanner for TMC port and baud rate, when IGO8 register BT TMC connection with your BT, exit it, go in save folder, there is system.ini file, and there you can find all necessary values - tmc port, baud rate, protocol, and that values use in Primo sys.txt, you'll need tmcgps.dll, gpstmc.dll and atmc_ce.dll, for Primo.exe , or if you have original app of that BT TMC, you can use it to detect port, br, etc.

You didn't post basic informations, like your PNA, BT TMC - model, etc, i wrote above, and expect help ? How ?

If you expect help, then post more info ...

p.s.
no conflicts with GPS port - it has default port - reserved for built-in gps reciever, with BT too not confilct, you just have to make stable connection.

That is the point. I don't have a way to make a working connection. I need some software that will create a virtual serial port from a BT connection, and I don't seem to have shell access. I was hoping to find a way to call a program from Primo but haven't managed to do that yet.

The device I have is a Navilock NL-324BTR and all the docs are in German. I don't know German. It does a SPP connection. That's all I know.

I've remembered a bit of software I've used in the past to create a serial port from a bluetooth connection on CE. It is called bvcomm.exe But I still need to be able to access it. Is there something in Primo that I could use to fie it up?

Primo with a skin does have an external programmes feature, but if you need it to start it automatically I'd start it and primo with mortscript
