Primo Problems!

Postby Mark S » Sat May 21, 2011 10:48 pm

Hi,
New to the forum & not particularly technically savvy so please be tolerant!

I just got a unit off ebay that runs Windows CE 5.0 & Primo on a Mediatek.

It seems to be unable to retain any changes I make.

Examples:

- It doesn't save the settings I choose via the wizard when I turn on (message: 'Error loading file: il8n/480_272/log_collection.xhtml' )

- When I click "Update & extras" which says: 'Error loading file: il8n/480_272/naviextracontent.xhtml'

- Changes such as stored Favourites are not retained after I turn the unit off.

Any kind person on here know if this is fixable stuff & suggest what I need to do or have I just got a faulty unit?

Welcome to Navitotal :)

Was Primo already on the device when you got it? Do you know whether it's a legal copy or not?
90% of problems can be fixed by deleting (Make a copy on your pc first) the 'Save' folder in the Primo directory, This is where all the settings are stored, Deleting it is like reinstalling Primo, A new folder will be created the next time Primo is started.
Problems (Including saving problems) can be caused by entries in the file called 'sys.txt', Open this file with Notepad and copy/paste here.
The 'Error loading...' problems could be a faulty data.zip

Post your sys.txt and delete the save folder first...

Much appreciated!

The unit was a gift from my brother (I want a useable satnav for Cyprus & have completely failed to get a wikimap shoehorned onto my Garmin). A quick google suggested the easiest approach was to buy something off ebay.

As regards the legality of the copy all I can honestly say is that I don't know. It was installed on the microSD card supplied with the unit by the vendor. It seems strange that primo is installed there & not directly to the device but like I said I'm not very tech savvy.

I've tried deleting the 'save' folder as suggested but I have all the same problems unfortunately.

Sys.txt as below:

[device]
type="pearl_gtx60"

[sound]
csv_voice_enabled=1

[debug]
experimental_features="1"

[network]
available="1"

Could you copy the data.zip to your computer, open it, and look in the folder "Devices" and see if "pearl_gtx60" is listed there?

I've taken a flyer & guessed what you said about where I should look is shorthand for: Data -> Config -> Devices because that file is basically a massive list of computers, phones etc. Was that the right thing to do?

I reckon you might be onto something..... no 'pearl_gtx60' listed but I can see 'pearl_35', 'pearl_43', 'pearl_gps35js' & 'pearl_gps43vt' (plus countless other device names that don't have pearl in their name of course)

Yes, that was the right thing to do and the right place to look!
That makes the first line in your sys.txt irrelevant--it is doing you no good--and may be causing some difficulties as Primo tries to load pre-configured settings from that line.

[device] <<this
type="pearl_gtx60" <<and this can be deleted

Does your unit have an internet connection possible? If not, the next section can be deleted also:
[network]
available="1"

Now the next step involves determining what resolution your unit is capable of--it would probably be either 480x272 or 800x400.
If you know the exact make and model number, it would help to determine what other settings may be required.

Cheers Yurbuh Tuggly,

I removed the device/pearl stuff, & also the network lines (device has no wifi).

For good measure I deleted the data folder.

Alas none of this fixed my problems

Packaging just says Win CE GPS, no model name or number.

I've had a look around within WinCE & all I can see is processor type (MTK, ARM1176JZ-S-M) & device name (GPS System), device description ( WindowsCE Device)

The problem is here the Language File.
The error 'Error loading file: il8n/480_272/log_collection.xhtml' means, that Primo can not find the xhtml file in the Language. It is possible, that in the Language File the compl. folder il8n/480_272 is missing.

The problem here is this build of Primo could have come from anywhere and may never work properly so rather than spend time trying to fix the problems here, i'd just download one of chas521's working from my device builds from the igo program sub forum here and only one map of your country, then add other content later. Use a different memory card and keep the original as a spare as you may need files from it.

Thanks all!

Got to admit that I'm daunted by all this but will have a crack at it.
It'll need a free weekend day & some booze for me to take the task on which may be 2-3 weeks from now as I'm going on a trip soon.

Great website full of enthusiast, knowledgeable & helpful members.
Apologies in advance as I'm bound to be back with more newbie questions

Mark S,

deleting the data.zip was a bad idea...

1-look around (google) for a full new installation for wince 5.0
2-make sure it is suitable for your resolution (480x272?)
3-delete any "save" directory that could come with it
4-if it does not work straighforward start moding the sys.txt file. You can start without any "sys.txt" file, after you get iGO running for the first time it would have saved into the "save" directory all the info about your device that it needs to keep working fine. Most important info is port COM and baud rate. IGO can find them for itself but allow several minutes under good receiving conditions (in the open)

Goodluck! You'll not going to get any better navigation software than this.

Strangely, I did not read anything about having deleted the data.zip while we suggested to download and install the Primo 1.2 by Chas521, available on this website.
Most problems we find here on NT are related to "Any other Primo, retrieved somewhere from the internet" so the very last thing to recommend is to google.

Nobody suggested deleting the data.zip.

We only give support on software downloaded from this site as we don't know what anyone else has done to it, or if it even works.

Deleting the save folder is required on any new installation.

Only use the sys.txt to set the port and baud and to fix problems, keep it as short as possible.

Another option (both options are good):
