FYI, .dem files are just eye candy. They don't do anything to help navigation; they only pretty things up on the map and chew-up memory. There isn't a solitary file of Alaska dem files. If it does exist, you would find it in the map files for the whole US. In my opinion, it's not worth the effort and time.

Chas, thanx for your help. Am I right in thinking that the DEM files contain terrain but also the building attributes? Given the million plus lakes we have I can live without them but it would be nice to have the landmarks and buildings. Are these in this file or another as the maps don't contain them. Thank you for your help

Actually, same thing with buildings and landmarks. They do not exist for many places - only major metropolitan areas. For example, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago. They may not exist for Alaska - Nome, Juneau. Yes, it is also in the entire map download.

BTW, congratulations on getting to 5.

You realize that was my aim, nothing to do with actually getting an answer :)

But seriously, how big is the building file. I really can't understand why this Mai-pain unit doesn't accept SDHC cards for maps. But the again it's running WinCE5 and instructions/support is non-existent (my backup camera was DOA...). I think I have another 800 meg available after loading the maps so if it would fit... could you pass on a pointer please?

Thank you!

Oh,it would fit with no problem. Problem is, I don't know if it exists. If it does, it goes into content\building.

It's not the buildings in any city. The cost to the mapmakers to artistically produce buildings in quite expensive so they limit it to certain more popular areas.

Sorry, just didn't want others to miss out on golf in Alaska since there's no DEM file :)
