Still trying to fix dad's Mio Digiwalker 269+

Postby Peacher » Wed Oct 20, 2010 8:02 am

All the time he working on the device with sdcard in and out. Did I missed the part that he did connect the device to the computer by usb cable. If he can't connect to mass storage. That's bricked. His explanation is not very clear to the last detail. Any attempt of recovery must be done with main computer not by internal WinCe rom software. Wait till he reply then we will know the outcome. If the device rom files is damaged or corrupted. He has a big problem - will have a get a expensive type A usb cable to flash the rom.

That's exactly how I have been working, up until just now.

A few minutes ago was the first time I managed to get the Mio to talk to my Windows 7 laptop! I had found an ActiveSync .cab for Mio that re-enabled the ability to actually use ActiveSync!

Hopefully this will not be necessary.

chas521 wrote:I don't think his device is bricked. If he goes to the Total Commander post link I gave him above [#13] and looks at the second program he might be able to work things out.

I'm using the Total Commander plugin for WinCE and can see the same things as I could with the little WinMobile WinCE Explorer. Using TC I was allowed to copy everything I could see onto my laptop.

I still think if he can get my 3.3 unlock download onto his Mio internal drive with nothing else on that internal drive, I think he might be there.

I still can't say I know what my "internal drive" is. I have always thought (and said) that it must be the path called \Storage Card\. See attached image 1.

Image 1
1829

What I can add is that I think MP4 has still a few files left in \\\WinCE Device\My Flash Disk\MioAutoRun\. I am guessing this since the filedates are much to recent (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) to be part of the software for my Mio. There are also some old files in a dir called \\\WinCE Device\My Flash Disk\mnav_ucf\.

I found an interesting file in \\\WinCE Device\Windows\ppath.txt

Code: Select all
[Navigator]\Windows\MioMapLauncher.exe
[MultiMedia]
[Music]<CHILD>\Windows\MP3Player.exe
[Picture]<CHILD>\Storage Card\ApplicationData\PictureViewer\PictureViewer.exe
[BACK]<CHILD>
[Tool]
[Contacts]<CHILD>\Windows\Contacts.exe
[Calculator]<CHILD>\Storage Card\ApplicationData\Calculator\Calculator.exe
[BACK]<CHILD>
[Setting]\Windows\MioUtility.exe

So, right now I can see my Mio in both regular Windows 7 Explorer and in Total Commander.
What do I do now? :scratch_one-s_head_

Let's go back to the beginning please. When you plug your device into the computer what do you see in "My Computer?" I assume that something shows up. Now this is entirely up to you. Can you delete everything from the Mio [not the SD card where you have the maps, etc.] and JUST copy my 3.3 download? I want your Mio to have just my download and nothing else.

You need to format the Mio using FAT32. MP4 hidden files cannot be seen as all.
Full clean install required.

How would I format it? It isn't seen as a disk to the system, only as a WinCE device.

Yes, it shows up as a WindowsCE device. It has the three internal "disks" as I have mentioned before. Only \ is showing Free Space and Size (19.2/19.5 MB); checking Properties of the other two gives no relevant information.

Now this is entirely up to you. Can you delete everything from the Mio [not the SD card where you have the maps, etc.] and JUST copy my 3.3 download? I want your Mio to have just my download and nothing else.

This means deleting EVERYTHING!? Everything in \ would include deleting the two references to "\Storage Card" and "\My Flash Disk". I wonder if that will work. Will that not remove system files, needed to keep ActiveSync running?

My 3.3 download HAS the system files for my Mio C320 but I do believe that they should work on your device. So yes, delete everything and put my files on your device. What is the worst that could happen, you brick your device and have to buy a new one? It's not working right now so what's the difference? Besides new GPS devices are less than $100.00 now. You've backed up the files/folders from your 269+ so there is really nothing to lose by trying.

Windows/ file options/ see system files.
You will see every file there.
Just click windows format your Mio and sdcards - all folders and named folder will all be gone.
Don't worry the rom files will still be there.
After format recopy your system files or chas521 unlock inside.
Switch off and restart to see your new program.

Ok, I will try that after I see if I can access it like Peacher mentions below.

hehe, daddy's gps ... Well, I've already warned him of that possibility and he didn't freak out :-)

You've backed up the files/folders from your 269+ so there is really nothing to lose by trying.

Only sad thing is that I "couldn't" do a full backup of all original files before I started mess around with it. I do think, however, that I have enough of the old files and with the original program dvd, I can probably restore it to somewhat workable state. With old, outdated maps there isn't much point, so as you say, I don't have anything to lose.

Peacher wrote:Windows/ file options/ see system files.

Yes, I understand this. This is what I see when I look in Total Commander, since it always shows all hidden files.

Just click windows format your Mio and sdcards - all folders and named folder will all be gone.

Hmm, I will see if I can see this, after changing the setting of folders. Remember I have the Mio hooked up to a Win7 laptop, so the menues of Explorer differ from WinXP. Yesterday I right-clicked all of the icons I could access and neither offered me the option of formatting. I'll keep looking :-)
I can also try hooking it up to a WinXP laptop and see if the option appear there.

Don't worry the rom files will still be there.

Yes, Read Only Memory :-)

After format recopy your system files or chas521 unlock inside.
Switch off and restart to see your new program.

I'm so looking forward to see the magic! :-)

I'll add that WinCE on some versions lock down system files on my flash disk so you cannot delete them, A trick i found on my medion is to delete "config.sys" which is the screen calibration settings and then soft reboot, When windows boots it goes straight to the screen callibration settings and stops booting until you complete the setup, Connect your device via activesync before calibrating your device and you'll find you can now delete system files on my flash disk and then copy chas's files back in.

Also Activesync is notoriously rubbish at large file transfers, (WMDC is a bit better) It works much better if you copy files in and out folder by folder, sometimes sub-folder by sub-folder. You cannot format system disks via Activesync.

Also you cannot delete any file in \Windows as they are in ROM, However they can be replaced in RAM and these replaced files CAN be deleted.
Currently sleeping...

Ok, here's what's happening now.
I've just used Total Commander to delete as much as possible (it leaves a few almost empty dirs and a couple of files) and then I copied Chas' 3.3 straight onto the root of the system. It allowed filecopy of everything but the files that was supposed to be by themselves in the root: calcprofile.ini, Settings.dat, FileManager.log and AudioPlayer.DAT. The rest of the files and dirs copied just fine.

Shut it OFF and then ON again: It booted, showing the bios screen at least twice, straight into the default original menu, with the four icons, Navigator, Multimedia, Tools and Settings. Browsing through the menus, everything seems to work, apart from the fact that the Calculator and Picture Viewer is still missing (says "Not installed" when clicking them) and of course it complains about there being "no map on SD or Flash".

I then copy a fresh set of iGO files onto an SD-card (single dir called iGO8) and insert it, after editing sys.txt to use 320_240 resolution.
Clicking Navigator ... "No map found in SD and Flash".

Ejecting SD-card and renaming the igo-dir to miomap and the igo.exe to miomap.exe. Editing one line in sys.txt: app="%SDCARD%/miomap". Re-inserting SD (not rebooting).
Clicking Navigator ... longer wait ... "Error. Program application database cannot be found."

Connecting the usbcable to the laptop, no activesync. Soft-rebooting, no activesync.
Installing the missing V2ActiveSyncPLUS.cab (using the WinCE Explorer, with which I could also copy those last 4 files onto the root of the system!) and soft-rebooting.
Still the same menu as always.

Inserting usbcable, no activesync connection established.
Soft-rebooting, ActiveSync established!
Checking content with TotalCommander.

\\\WinCE Device\Storage Card\MiomapLauncherLog.txt has the following text:
Code: Select all
Buffer=[[SDPath]]
Buffer=[\\SD Card\Miomap\Miomap.exe]
Buffer=[[FlashPath]]
Buffer=[\\MioMap\MioMap.exe]
Launcher.ini SDPath=[\\SD Card\Miomap\Miomap.exe], FlashPath=[\\MioMap\MioMap.exe]
Map=[\SD Card\Miomap\Miomap.exe] on SD not found
Map=[\MioMap\MioMap.exe] on Flash not found

Just to test I edit the dirname and filename to exactly them mentioned in the logfile.
Pointless, all have already the exact same name as mentioned in the log.

Now I have to try and get a little bit of sleep.

For some reason that I can't fathom, it keeps going back to the v 2.0 not my 3.3. If somehow you can ONLY get my 3.3 on the internal drive, you would not see Navigation but the word MioMap. Clicking/pressing MioMap would go right to the black unlock where you could get into the nav program. But you can't get it completely clean. It may be time to think about a new device unless the old maps are OK for you.

Can't I have your unlock on the SD? And after it has loaded continue on to the navigation program?
