TMC Foler files

TMC Foler files

Postby Grandstar » Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:51 pm

My device has the TMC receiver built in. I'm using Primo2. TMC is detected.

In the TMC folder there are several files, for example: UnitedKingdom-TrafficMaster.tmc, or France-ViaMichelin.tmc.

Do I understand that you require these files for TMC to work in the specific country?

Where would I get files for Toronto Canada, or USA?

As you know, we can't purchase subscriptions anymore, but if we could, would a file be generated and placed into the TMC folder? How does that work?

I'm not familiar with TMC but as far as I know there are no files in the US available unless you have a subscription. I imagine that Canada is the same.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Please do NOT post any thanks. Simply press the hand icon with the "thumb up" which is the thank you button.

What you are probably seeing are the premium TMC licences for various regions. These are for receiving TMC signals that you would normally need a subscription for (or purchase the license some other way). They are not needed at all to receive the free TMC broadcasts from various participating stations.
In the US and Canada, if there are free broadcasts available, you will be able to receive them. If only 'paid' TMC broadcasts are available, you would need to acquire a license file and place it in the existing TMC folder.
Where do you get them? I don't know.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

TMC USB Receiver

Postby Grandstar » Sun Feb 05, 2012 9:17 pm

Here is a link to a TMC Traffic Receiver. It uses a mini USB plug which fits into most GPS devices. Do you think it would provide TMC data to IGO Primo devices with the TMC software installed?

I think you are misunderstanding. There is no "TMC software". There are only premium licenses which are not even needed to 'make TMC work'. And if your unit already has a TMC receiver built in (as you said above), and it is being recognized by your navigation software, there is no reason whatsoever to add another receiver, USB or otherwise. It would solve or improve nothing. Such add-on units are only for devices that otherwise have no ability to receive TMC broadcasts.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Ok, thank you for the clarification. I'm in Toronto and Total Traffic is broadcasting. My device picks up nothing. Yet, IGO shows the TMC receiver on the map screen, and I can go to the Traffic Settings. But I never get any updates. The TMC receiver chipset is installed in the device when I order it.

So IGO sees it ok. Hence my thinking that some software is required. I read on this site that you could purchase subscriptions as of 6 months ago, but no they don't sell it.

In the TMC folder in Content, there are many files for TMC in UK, France etc. I think they are the licenese (subscriptions for those countries.) My thinking was to since I don't have a subscrition, and can't buy one, to use the TT TMC cable. I could be missing something as I am certainly not an expert.

That is because you (maybe) don't have the license file for "Total Traffic" in Toronto. That has nothing to do with whether the TMC receiver is working or not..if it is scanning for stations, it is working.

No. Only a license file if it is required for certain broadcasting stations.
An example:
I am in Europe, with a fully functioning built in TMC receiver in my device. With no "TMC" folder at all (and thus no license files), I can receive the dozens of free broadcasts with no trouble at all. If I add the TMC folder and the license files for my region, I then can can receive a few more broadcasts that were skipped when there was no license file.

No, the only thing you are 'missing' is the (apparently required) license file for your area in Canada. If you cannot buy one, they may be available elsewhere (like the ones for France, Europe, etc) if somebody else had one and uploaded it somewhere. Then again, maybe nobody has, and you will not be able to lock on to those frequencies ever.
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

I played around for months trying to get TMC working in the US, finally I bought the license online, but this site doesn't exist any more. Punching in the license key, iGO generated a file in the save folder. That was during iGO 8.3 days. Lucky enough if you put that keyfile into the Primo save folder (1.2 as well as 2.0) TMC works, but: Only on the device you bought the key for. Prerequisite of course is that you do have a device recognizing the TMC receiver plugged between the USB port and the powersupply of the GPS unit or built in, which seems to be the case here. If anybody is interested I can put the whole procedure here which I found years ago in another forum. But to read your device ID in order to generate a key it seems as if you need to install iGO 8.3, or do the commands
enable_igo_provider=1
enable_subscription=1
work in the [TMC] section of Primo's sys.txt too?

I'm now running IGO 2. The TMC receiver is embedded into the device. IGO sees it. In Settings, Traffic, you can turn Traffic Receiver ON or OFF. If there were no TMC receiver built in, this function would be grayed out.

When I turn Traffic Receiver ON with a check mark, other grayed out settings come to life, such as Online Traffic, Detour, and Event Types.

With Traffic Receiver selected, on the Main Map there is an ico with an Antenna which you can click on. It brings you to a new screen called Traffic Summary.

There are no events affecting your route - it says, and it always says that.

IGO is not asking for a keycode or anything. I know we have a TMC broadcast here. So this is the limit of my knowledge.

I would like to know, if I had a subscription, how would IGO accept it. For many people accessing the sys.txt file is out of the question, easy enough for us. So this leads me to think that if this device had been bought by a "provider" the file for TMC would have been installed in advance, and all the user would have to do would be to pay for a subscription.

Maybe?
