Undo whatever else you may have done except the cars stuff.
IE; if you have attempted to modify any files or insert your own loading.bmp, replace anything related with the original files and try again. If you have added any skin files, remove them. Before restarting, delete the Save folder under iGo8.

Thanx, I will try that.

Mods done were a change in the branding.zip file removing the loading.bmp picture and adding mine in the save and 800_480 directories. Nothing else was modified directory wise. Ditto for the sys.txt, other than device name and the 3Dcar logicals nothing was modified and I left the icon sizes the same so I did not add the change in size you suggested in case I later wanted to modify them. No skin files were added other than what came with Chas' package.

In trying to understand what is happening here, was this out of memory error message generated because it tried to read into memory the entire 3Dcar definitions? I know that many files are zipped and are expanded at run time. So if the above does not solve the problem, not to dispute your knowledge, but I can't see how a loading.bmp image being deleted in one zipped file and added in two subdirectories would cause a memory error, would perhaps trimming the number of cars in the 3DCar folder solve this? I'll try your solution first of course and let you know.

A last point:

In the new version I got from Chas, I noted that contrary to my old version and despite the fact that mortscript was in the wrong directory, I still had an option in one of the set-up screens to choose a 3D car (though only the one default model as it happened the mini cooper). In the new version there is no option to choose 3Dcar. This was of course before I made the changes today. But doesn't it seem strange that the option, never mind that it would later not find the cars or mortscript, was not present?

No. That has nothing to do with your latest error. Restore the branding.zip to the original. You probably corrupted it when you attempted to replace the loading.bmp.

iGo8, by itself, does not support 3D Cars. You usually need to run a skin that does. Maybe you had such a skin in your old setup.

Here's what I did.
I do not run iGo8...have not for a very long time. But just to prove it works, I loaded the EXACT same version from Chas that you now have on a GPS device, put in the 3DCars exactly how I described earlier, loaded a diMka skin, and guess what? I get a choice of 93 3DCars and everything works exactly how it should.
Do you want the same (proven working) skin that I used? I will post it for you if you do.

I may be away from the computer for a while, so may not see your reply, so here is the working skin:

[Please Register or Login to download file]

Download it, do not unzip it, do not open it, do not even stare at it too long. Just copy the zip file to iGo8\Content\Skin\...the same place where you would now see the kikker skin.zip from Chas.
Start iGo and go to Settings>Map Settings>Skin and choose the Dimka. The system will need to restart. You should also see a new loading screen when it does. Then go into Settings again and you should see the car options. Tap that, (ignore the warning about "default car") then "Scan". Pick the car you want. The system will need to restart after every car choice you may make now and in the future.

You will find many other new options within the new skin. Feel free to set it up however you want.

THANK YOU again! I've finally received the new microSD reader from China since my new unit (in my car) was DOA. I'm busy cutting pcb board and reinstalling so I'll be out as well. I'll post as soon as I can - wife's car won't be back until later today. But APPRECIATE the quick reply.

If I can get my unit working I'll test that on mine.

If I can interject here, to change the skin in iGO8, go to settings, second page, menu, skin.

OK, SUCCESS. Rebuilt everything from scratch and Ms. Dimka is working as advertised. The last step is getting the picture of the dogs as loading.bmp.

If I remember from a previous posting, one doesn't need to futz with branding.zip, but simply copy the loading.bmp in the data\ui_igo8\800_480 is that correct. I remember reading, not sure if it was you Chas but you mentioned that futzing with the branding.zip etc. never really worked.

I am correct in this?

On a separate issue, I finally repaired my new unit that arrived with a dead microSD card reader (man you can get to hate those readers real quick) and loaded Route66 onto it just to test the unit before I came back to work on the wife's one. It went in the trash.

Thank you again for your help and patience!

That is not exactly what was said. You seem to have issues attempting to modify the special *.zip files (as in change a file within them), so here are the step by step instructions just for you that should result in success if followed PRECISELY:
1) Copy both data.zip and branding.zip to your computer
2) On your SD Card, verify that you have the following:
a) A folder named UI_Igo8 in the root of Igo8
b) inside that folder, a subfolder with your resolution name...800_480
c) inside that folder, a folder named night
2a) If any of the above folders or subfolders are absent, create them.
So it looks like this:
iGo8>
UI_iGo8>
800_480>
Night

2b)Into the folder 800_480 put a loading.bmp of the correct proportions and color depth.
2c)Into the folder Night put the same loading.bmp
3) On your computer, open branding.zip>ui_igo8>800_480, highlight loading.bmp and delete it from the archive. Don't do ANYTHING else.
4) On your computer, open data.zip>ui_igo8>800_480, highlight loading.bmp and delete it from the archive. Don't do ANYTHING else.
5) On your SD Card, move the unmodified data.zip and branding.zip to a safe place on your computer for backup.
6) On your computer, copy the branding.zip and data.zip that you just deleted the loading.bmp(s) from to your iGo8 folder on your SD Card.

7) Start iGo8 and rejoice at the new loading screen.

The main problem centered on transferring bmp files between the mac and the xp machine. What appeared perfectly normal as an 800x480x24 pixel file on the mac when it was transferred to the PC ended up as a 800x480x1 file. Not exactly sure why as it displayed fine on the mac it was only when I got constant errors despite your directions that I decided to look at the bmp file on the xp machine and saw what the problem was. Again my thanx for your patience.

So on behalf of my wife and myself we thank you! She has her little red car, her dogs and when she gets tired of that pic I can swap it out in the ui_igo8 folder sans having to unzip and re-zip... life is good.

Thank you and Chas kindly for your help!
