What map provider should I use in Croatia/Slovenia?

What map provider should I use in Croatia/Slovenia?

Postby filesupload100 » Thu May 15, 2014 9:09 am

Next month I'm about to visit Croatia and Slovenia.
From your experience as residents or tourists, maps (and poi's) of which provider (HERE / TomTom) will give better and more accurate navigation?
And extra question, what app works better in this countries, iGO or Primo (with the recommended map)?

Thanks for you input.

I am not from there, but I would suggest the local maps, if available.
An indicator is mostly the map size in (kilo)bytes. Local maps outsize the TT/NT maps by far.

Is the size of the map is not a function (at least partially) of compression?
I have "HERE 2013.Q3", "TomTom 20130.9" and from the local provider "Monolit 2013.07"

HERETomTomMonolit
map11mb16mb36mb
poi2.2mb0.3mb1.1mb

We can see that the map of the local provider is the biggest, but the poi is not. Does it mean that it is providing less information/places? Is it logical to use HERE poi's with the Monolit map?

Normally, the biggest file is always the file to use. That is the case for maps and for POI.
The POI's from one provider with the map from another one is no problem. One can even use all 3 POI files. The result will be double and triple POI's but the coverage will be more complete ;)
For Here POI the "standard" and exented, should be used together (if you have them). TT requires only the "normal" or the "premium" POI for full coverage (all of their POI). I can't say for Monolit.
One more thing, near my home location both Here and TomTom still have POI in their database that don't exist anymore since years. Thus size means ultra-complete but current?

What "hnr" files (Preprocessed Road Network) should I use for Croatia/Slovenia, full Europe, east Europe or Western Europe?
How do I get the benefit of this files? Do I need to do something in the rout settings, or it is being calculated in the backgroung?
Thanks

Since we (or it is just me? :)) usualy don't have all maps in the device, add this 2 lines to your sys.txt:
[route]
hnr_ignored_missing_country_ids=*

Croatia is Eastern Europe, therefor you don't need WesternEurope.hnr files.
I think (not sure) in settings-traffic the "traffic patterns" (if that is the exact name for the setting) must be enabled

Thanks.
What about Slovenia? Can I use (or need both), Eastern Europe and full Europe?

I didn't find any relevant settings under Traffic. There is "Route Planning Method" under "Route Settings", but this one is working even if there is no "hnr" files in the folder.

And one more Q, what is the use of "fsp" files (Smart Route Profiles), how they get involved?

Sorry for mixing up things and giving an incomplete answer. My bad.

Slovenia is East Europe as well. You can use both hnr, but full includes East, so ...
The settings I "copied" and translated from my Android smartphone.
But my mistake. I changed language now and in English, it's historical traffic.

Fsp files go in the "histspeed" folder which explains most of the purpose. Known traffic amounts/jams on certain hours/days/weeks that Primo takes in consideration. Hnr are just predefined routes, which is not the same.

Hsp (UNAV) files are fsp files specially for Becker, but can be used on newer Primo. Maybe best to use hsp files because they are updated each month, while fsp are updated every quarter (together with maps).

Hmmmm... I'm not sure.
On my device, "fsp" files called "Smart Route Profiles", and they should be in content/map folder. When I put the files in histspeed folder, the device does not recognized them.
As I wrote before, I have no idea for what use they are for.

The "histspeed" folder is for "hsp" files, for historical traffic.

Hmm, fsp is Navteq/Here, different approach?
Since I have the UNAV files and I get detours announced on traffic jam sensitive spots, I suppose all is working.
fsp and hsp are basically the same files, and have the same purpose: setting up a better route depending on the time and day.

Just came back from this 2 Beautiful countries.

I used iGO8 (as habit) with "HERE" map for Croatia, and the local providor's "Monolit" for Slovenia.
I was In Croatia only for short period (but long drive), and the only problem was a crash for missing icon (3 times).
In Slovenia, while driving on freeways and highways it was OK, and the map (roads) was accurate. The problem was the speed limits. In most cases, the speed limit on out side cities is wrong :(. The most popular error is showing 90 k/h when the real allowed speed in 60 or 70.
I didn't use Primo, so I can't tell about the behavior of hnr or other related files.

Image
I'll look for this missing file and see if I can restore the route without crashing.
EDIT: The file was found in the data.zip in /ui_igo8/480_800/ and I copy it to /ui_igo8/480_272/ and now the route simulation works perfect.
