Wed Nov 16, 2011 5:14 pm

Firstly hi everyone. I've been a member of other GPS forum for ages and currently have an old Tomtom happily working with the latest maps and a version 9 navcore. Come across your forum and am impessed with it. I'm one of lifes gadget men and love getting the most out of a device.

I am bying one of those Chinese double din units for my Focus - WinCE 6.0, 800x480. Have been looking at all the satnav software available. What do people recommend please.

How much working Program Memory does/will it have, and what does it come with by default, if anything?

The spec says it is:-

-Screen type: 7 inch High Definition TFT LCD Screen
-Resolution: 800 * RGB * 480
-Digital or Analog: High clear digital screen
-Touch screen control: Yes
-GPS Model: SiRF IV
-Operation System: Microsoft Windows CE.NET 6.0
-RAM Memory: 128 MB
-Memory Size: Can expand to 8GB
-Supported Maps: I-GO, Polnav, Smart2go… -Free 2GB SD Card included: GPS Compatible
Voice guidance: Yes
-Support 2D/3D Map Views: Yes

Doesn't actually say it comes with an software

The specs are pretty good. You could run just about anything you wanted....except TomTom (does not play nice with WinCE 6).
Personally, I prefer iGo Primo available here:

TTS Voices here:

Then just add the maps for wherever you are:

But all that is just my personal preference.

When you decide what you want, this thread should probably be moved to the appropriate section.

many thanks for this. so if i wanted a compatiable UK map what do i go for. a lot of links talk about 8 maps. and also are the dem files any good

For iGO Primo you will need maps marked as 8.3 or R3 (They are the same) Any maps which are 8.0 are years old.

The Dem file displays hills and valleys in the background when the map is visible and in 3D mode, It looks incredible sometimes, but needs a lot of processing power and RAM, Dem files are optional.

For guidance my Mio M400 has no problems with using Dem files.

On a new install don't overload the device, ie, Only install one map, Test, Then install speedcams, Test, and so on... Otherwise you may run into problems.

You will also need to find out what the GPS settings are as Primo won't find them automatically.

You could use iGO Primo or iGO 8.3.5, second one is easer to setup. You just copy it to the device and insert content files (maps, pois...), doesn't need setup in sys.txt.

That is not exactly true in all cases. It is highly dependent on two things:
1) The hardware device involved
2) The existing sys.txt in the package downloaded--if the settings in sys.txt are wrong for your hardware, neither iGo8 nor Primo will operate correctly.

Though, in some cases (again, dependent on the hardware), a minimal sys.txt or no sys.txt at all will work just fine.

Thats true, but the most devices with iGO 8.3.5 can work without sys.txt. This is the most user friendly iGO program for GPS devices.

Yes, you are correct but the keyword[s] in your post should be MOST DEVICES. While it's very true what you say about the program finding its own way, unless you have sys.txt entries that are your device specific, the program will not start because the device is not recognized. The same can be said about resolutions as was just recently exposed in some posts here. All in all, you are correct but so is Yurbuh Tuggly [perhaps more correct]. It really comes down to trial and error.

Hey

I use a Chinese supplier for all sorts and the majority of win ce 6.0 units are loaded with igo 8, a good software if you are living in 2007 Haha preload one of the other softwares mentioned here.

For the record no chance you can name the supplier? I use chinavasion and deal extreme for my Chinese suppliers...

Newer DealExtreme devices come with iGO Primo software preinstalled.
