TT 710 bin or rejuvenate?

Postby roydrage » Mon Aug 12, 2019 11:04 am

I have a TT 710 that served me very well before and after navcore v7.903 with various 8x navcores. I tried 9.702 x10 navcore linked from here and had no joy, eternal reboots and not recognising 1030 maps although FastActivate reports map patched.
I have read most of the posts here and on the other places regarding recent attempts at refreshing this dinosaur of a PND with no conclusive "yes it works for me".
So, have I gone wrong in my attempts to run 9.701 or 9.702x10 navcore and 1030 maps on a 710?

Having given a couple of heart & lung transplants to 710's myself in the past, I came to the conclusion that the newer navcores presented one or two virtually insurmountable issues: the device switching itself 'on' when left unattended, very slow performance (probably related to... ), insufficient memory for modern firmware and maps, shortage of spare parts (particularly mounts) etc. So, despite having managed to get one to use speech recognition and computer voices, the day finally dawned (around 5 years ago) when I realised that it was time to say a reluctant "goodbye". Like any 'old friend', there comes a time in life when we have to part, however difficult that may be. I do miss that little screen and the plump body, but hey ho .. life must move on. I take comfort in knowing that my 930s still have (hopefully) a few years left in them - enough perhaps to outlast me. So, my advice? Say farewell and give your 710 the send-off it deserves in recognition of the loyalty it has shown you. Rather than consign it to the destructive horror that is 'recycling', entomb it along with it's accessories and some accompanying printed testimony in a 'time capsule' and give it a dignified burial in your garden or in some other appropriate place where it can remain undisturbed until some far future archaeologist can re-discover it's wonder.

A failure for me, it works a treat after another attempt at a clean install this afternoon. A failure because I don't know where I went wrong on the last several attempts with navcore variants including the one that now works, 9.702 x10. I battered the menu back and forth and changed settings several times and there was not the lag I have seen in the other navcores since 7.903. It operates in my car well enough. I will use it daily and report back whether it falls down or not.
The bootloader version is news to me, it was certainly 5.5120 four days ago, now it is 5.5279. Me thinks blind rage combined with frustration and red wine made this member miss a "system" file in one of the attempts to make it work. Maybe that was what it required, who knows, it works and we will see for how long before it coughs.

I actually have the thing working, no thanks to me. The navcore I mentioned in the OP, 9.702 x10 and now works, I tried this on a clean card and it fell down previously hence my post.
Now I know for sure that I lost track of the various installs I tried after that. I know for sure that I missed removing a "system" file in at least one attempt because the bootloader is now 5.5279.
As I have mentioned on another post in the thread I will let you know if the thing spits its dummy out during extended use.

I tested the TT 710 today with a few routes around a large town that I know well. Set the vehicle to be a 40 ton articulated and sure enough it avoided the roads it should avoid.
It does not mysteriously reboot like it did with most of the post 7.903 navcores and there appears to be no more lag in address prediction than affected the 7.903 navcore.
In short i am impressed, TMC and phone working, does not spit dummy out on roundabouts unless at too high speed.
If you have a TT710 and you want the Truck version I can recommend it.
I used the link for 9.702 x10 provided by biggerdave in this thread navcores-tomtom-devices/tomtom-910-truck-navcore-702-t21167.html?hilit=truck%20x10#p172701 combined with the huge loquendo voice files and the 1030.9533 truck map.
Without this site many people would have paperweights of sentimental value.
No I have not tried loading the speedcam files to the map file yet, i will get round to it and report back.
