910 HD Failing?

910 HD Failing?

Postby pilotman » Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:50 pm

My 910 has become unstable, requiring frequent reboots after showing the red X on the screen. It will work ok for a while but then freeze. I assume the HD is failing and I'm planning to replace it. I've copied all the files onto my pc and ordered a new HD. Once I replace the HD - not all that difficult but requiring careful work - is it necessary to do anything more than copy the files back onto the new HD? I'd like to make sure I've done everything necessary before closing up the unit. Thanks for any help.

Did you try the Search top/right for "replace HDD" where there are 16 matches?

Tried there first but I didn't see anything that directly related to what I'm doing. I have my 910 diassembled in front of me with the hd removed. I found a 30GB replacement on ebay for just a few dollars. I'm looking for advice for what to do when he hd arrives. Is installing it, connecting the 910 to my computer, and then uploading the saved files sufficient? I don't want to install it, close up the unit and then find out I missed a step.

I'm wondering why you bought a new HDD, it's more easy to add an SD slot to your GO 910 which I did already a few years ago
It has a small disadvantage, your GO 910 will now show up as a GO 710 which was original equipt with an SD slot

When you've made a full copy of your faulty HDD, just put it back to the new HDD 1:1
To be able to read and write the 1.8 inch HDD I bought also a special interface for it, using the USB port will take some time

I can't seem to find a simple usb connector for the 1.8" hd. All I can find on ebay are ones for a 2.5". Once I re-install the hd I'm assuming that I'll be able to access the hd through the TT interface if the hd is empty. Thanks a lot for the advice. If replacing the hd works, it really wasn't that difficult a process.

I bought that interface from a company in Germany through the internet.
It comes with 2 flatkables one for the Toshiba or the Hitachi HDD which one of them can sit in the GO 910.

[Please Register or Login to download file] is the url

I even have the HDD that only kept sometimes reading errors with me.
If you look at the aluminum frame you will see that there is also a place reserved for an SD slot which I bought in England.
By a stupid coincidence I got a good friend some parts for the GO 910 including a screen, battery and SD slot.

I am almost certain that the frames of the GO series 510, 710 and 910 must be the same.
If you live around the corner borrowing from the interface would not be a problem, but assume you do not live near Rotterdam.
To transfer everything, there is nothing left but to use the supplied USB standard.

I installed a new (used but functional) 30GB HDD but the unit still fails in the same way as before. I assume the problem is not with the hd but in the driver software of perhaps even the main board. I give up. Installing the hd wasn't that difficult except for reconnecting the ribbon connector to the new hd.

Any suggestions on a replacement? I need one that I can easily swap US and UK maps. The 910 allowed me to keep both on the hd and switching maps was easy. I'd be happy with one that's no longer manufactured if in good contition.

Contact me via PM or what I prefer via my private email address, please
Mine hdd is still good for 90% and if you're realy interested I've a spare SD slot too fo the GO 910
It would be more easy when you're living next door, I've the interface to connect that 1.8 inch to a computer too to test if the HDD is faulty
