Hi All

My old TT One Xl is geeting a bit old, and slow...Sometimes i am beyond the turn before it tells me to turn. LOL In the CBD, it gets absolutely lost.

A mate can post TT from USA, as the TT's here in Oz are really expensive.

I have heard that with some of the new TT's, its not possible to upgrade the navcores or upgrade to newer maps.

Which model, should I buy ?

The options I considered are:

A) XXL 550 Around $120

B) VIA 1500 $190

C) Via 1535 $210

I like the looks of the new Via 1500 etc.


***** Q 2) How is the TT XXL540, sold in Oz ? Are they OK & Easy to upgrade the maps ? (Is the USA XXL550 much better ?)

Maybe I should just do that then, and forget the import from USA

*****Q 3) How are the imports from Ebay, China. Get 7" GPS's for $100, How bad are they compared to the TT's. Does anyone have any experience with them ?

1) You do not need a new device. I have updated many TomTom ONE and ONE XL units just like yours and have made them run faster than they ever were before! You should try some SE navcores which are RAM friendly (or save RAM) for best results. I recommend 8.412, 8.545, 8.560, 8.562 or 9.205. Any of these navcores will speed up your device and allow you to use a full featured IQ map (instead of the basic map that your device originally supports).

If you still want to get a new TomTom, out of the 3 you mentioned, only a) XXL 550 would be a good choice. Don't waste your money on any VIA model or any model that was made from September 2010 onwards. You heard correctly that you won't be able to update maps for free as we do here. With those newer models you will have to pay for the new maps.

Even better, try and find any GO x20/x30/x40/x50, for eg. a GO 730 or 930. You can update these models with almost any navcore you want and they are packed with features.

2) The XXL 540 is an OK unit. It won't be MUCH faster than your ONE XL. It has the same CPU speed as your ONE XL, although it has double the RAM, so it should run a bit smoother. The good thing is you will be able to use most navcores with this model and it won't struggle with any version 9xxx navcores.

3) You can't compare TomToms and Chinese units. TomTom hardware is just so much more superior. It's worth the extra money for speed, performance and reliability. Don't bother going for the cheapy Chinese units - you will be disappointed.

Good to know that about the Chinese GPS's as there are heaps on Trademe in NZ for sale and cheap as well. Will be staying with my Tom Tom new Edition which thanks to help from lemonfish is going like a new one

Please, could you confirm that

ALL the GO x20/x30/x40/x50 devices are up-datable, eg from 320 to 950T
ALL XXL and Xç device are up datable

All tomtoms are up-datable.

maybe I misinterpreted what were Lemoni saying with

I've understand that I cannot update myself, with the files given from the forumt, the newer tomtom go, and that the chance is available only with series GOx20 -> x50.

Is it wrong ? Can the latest TT1000 be updated in the same manner the TT520 was ?

You missed the key word FREE. All Tomtoms are updatable. Those that use TT Home can be updated thru the forum. Those that use MyTomTom can not.

may I renew the question in the terms:

ALL the GO x20/x30/x40/x50 devices are up-datable FOR FREE, eg from 320 to 950T
ALL XXL and Xç device are up datable for FREE

Are all the other newer models not upgradable for free ?

All Tomtoms are updatable. Those that use TT Home can be updated FREE thru the forum. Those that use MyTomTom can not.

In other terms, I have only the go720, and really don't know which model started using the myTomTom software.
I would buy a second unit, that could be capable of beeing freely auto updating.

Hi Guys, is the TomTom XL350 a reasonable unit? The unit I'm looking at buying now is a recent XL 350 1ET0.019.01

I had a Go720 but its battery was nearly dead and it had possibly the worst windscreen mount ever made. I ended up passing it over to my dad and bought a VIA, which is quite a good unit but has some frustrating limitations, mostly just that it can sometimes take a long time to get a signal and theres no Quick GPS Fix available from tomtom, and that it's expensive to update the maps.
Now I want to go back to an older unit which has easily updatable navcores and maps.


Please let me know of the XL350 has any massive disadvantages? Thanks!

You should have kept the 720 and put a new battery in it ;)

Downunder I recall your name from a few years ago when I was finding maps for the 720! Good to see you're still helping us noobs with maps and navcores :)

Yep, the 720 was a really good GPS (apart from the screem mount). But to be fair I never used all the extra functions like bluetooth and FM sending.
So will the XL350 be ok? I assume I will still be able to change navcores & maps on it?

I personally don't like the newer devices as from the user reports not all Navcores work or the voices go silent.
A good TT starts with GO and since the V10 Navcores the end is reached with the 720/730.
You better do some homework on the device in terms of users with problems - if you find nothing you should be lucky...
