Another 'what model should I buy' question

Mon Jun 14, 2010 8:06 am

Hi all, I know there are a few of these about, but a bit of guidance qwould be much appreciated
My trusty old One v1 has expired, and I need a new model.
What I don't need is:
Bluetooth or FM transmitter, I'm not going to play MP3 or videos on it. I probably wont use the Live service (unless someone can convince me that it works, and works better than local traffic news on RDS on the radio, and its worth it).

What I do want is ALG, IR and a decent speed. I've got a 4GB SD card, but could get MicroSD if required. Voice input - does it work and is it useful?

Tomtom's own site has a refurb 530 for 120UKP or a 730 for 150UKP. 4.3" screen or above is preferable. I'll be messing round with Navcores, maps etc.

As I said, any suggestions welcome.

Love the site,

Cheers

If you don't mind an older model go for the 720,730 or maybe even the 530.
You can still get them new or as display models from a shop, but there are good second hand ones on Ebay too.
Even if you don't need it they have all hardware features excepte EPT (which is overrated anyway).
These models accept almost any Navcore without problems and offer the most value for the buck.
Leave the ONE XL alone ;)
My car is pretty noisy and most of the time voice input makes some mistakes but if it is used in a normal car it works just fine and can make driving a bit safer.

Many thanks as ever for the swift response. My wife is buying it for me as a birthday present, so I'll have to see if I get the 530 or 730. Depend how much she loves me :).

for your GPS, i would buy one thats got at least this hardware:

-SD card slot
-64MB of ram
-4,3" screen

once its got that, you can do everything regarding MAPS and NAVCORES!!!
Pretty much all TOMTOM GO's have at least those hardware specs...

-TOMTOM GO720
-TOMTOM GO920
-TOMTOM GO630
-TOMTOM GO730

I reccomend you get the GO 720 i have a lot of experiance with this device and you get all of the extras and it can use just about any navcore and as it is an old device you should get a good deal ;)

Thanks for the advice all - i've had a look on ebay and the other gps sites that sell the units. Ebay has second hand 720's for 80UKP and upwards, but I might opt for the official Tomtom refurb 530 for 120UKP. At least I'll get a guarantee, and presume the 530 can do most things that the 720 can?

Appreciate the help as always,

well pretty much... except the GO530 has only 1GB internal Memory.... the GO720 has 2GB....

but overall, my vote is for the GO720 hands down.... [Please Register or Login to download file]
