Bootloop - Is my TomTom ONE (v8) - 1GB Broken ? [SOLVED]

Ho ho ho !


Here a small question from the Netherlands.

I currently have a TT One in my posession to (try to) update but something weird has happened.
First of, sometimes it doesn't start properly. I have to turn it off, turn it on again,
hear the little drums and voila it starts.

Well despite some starting probs I thought I could update the map to a v930.xxx or so.
Here is what I did :

1. Made a backup via TT Home
2. Made an extra backup using Windows Explorer (inc hidden files)
3. Went to a birthday of my friend
4. Came back and....... ehhr oh ?

Suddenly, it doesn't start anymore.
I see the progressbar run to the end, then I get to see the splash.bmp, after that the screen goes blank and I see the progressbar run to the end, then I get to see the splash.bmp, after that the screen goes blank and I see the progressbar run to the end, then I get to see the splash.bmp, after that the screen goes blank and I see the progressbar run to the end, then I get to see the splash.bmp, after that the screen goes blank and I see the progressbar run to the end, then I get to see the splash.bmp, after that the screen goes blank and ........... well I think you get the idea.....

It only stops after the battery runs out or if I hook it up to my PC.
The last one gives me a D:-drive and I see +/- 940 Mb of data.

So I tried formatting the memory. It has no SD card, only 1 Gb internal.
I formatted using the computermanager (Rightclick om "My computer" and then "Manage") and I used FAT32.
That yealed no errors as far as I could tell.

Then I placed my explorer-backup back on the D:-drive, rebooted but to no avail. It still loops at boot.

I also tried to use TomTom Home to upgrade and I even did a clear flash and a truckload of other things I
have found on this forum. Nothing seems to work ???

Hurrah ! It is alive and kickin' ehhr alive and navigating...

So what happened, I came across a post in another forum (don't worry, no crossposting here) with the answer.
It appears that USB storage devices can actuallt get corrpupted by incorrect ejection from the PC
or hanging during writing. For example when the battery of the TT runs out.

So ? And ? Just format and voila ? Well here is where it gets intersting.
It seems if you use Windows OS (like I have Win 7) it doesn't erase a stick or in my case the TomTom,
but simply marks everything as "Unused".

Anyway. The posts stated if you want to force a complete (re)write of a FAT32 filesystem,
format it in a different filesystem and immediatly afterward format again only then with FAT32.

This actually doesn't sound plausible. I mean why does setting an unused-status with Windows computermanager
(The rightclick on "My computer" and then "Manage") take so long ???? And why did a chkdsk not find anything wrong ?

Anyway, since noone seemed to know the answer and this was the only lead I had,
I decided to give it a try.

1. I Formatted on NTFS
2. Then I formatted again with FAT32
3. Restored the backup

After this I ejected the TomTom, saw the famous splash logo (Yawn )
but then.... the map, the menu everything was back ! YAY !

Later I updated the map and added GPS-fix, +/- 40.000 unique campgrounds, a bunch of speedcams
and a little VW Golf as an arrow for the map. No problems anymore with starting, no errors at all


Soooooooo I'm a happy camper again..
