Ok well it looks like I have inadvertently gone with your advice as the plot thickens, I purchased a 2007 TT one on eBay and I have just been given something else which I discovered when I got home, I'm going to check with seller this is ok before I prat about reprogramming. the advert is dumb, it's a picture of the TT one XL yellow box but even I didn't notice the picture of the satnav itself is different model because I was in a bit of a haste to get it.

What was actually received is a TT Go 520 with WiFi (the F is that for?) it also has bluetooth function. I have turned it on, it took some minutes of it charging up a bit before it was useful for checking my location but I put in a postcode to a nearby town and it apparently works. Can I still use this then, do I proceed with trying out that new 2019 navcore? TIA and thanks for all your help.

It's the black one. I am not sure how it works yet so am going to look on youtube a tutorial/intro. It seems to know 4 updates are available but it doesn't tell me what these are. I was hoping to connect tot he computer but I don't think the usb cable supplied is a data cable because neither OS I have installed can read it, Win 10 says it saw the usb device but it had issues. Anyway the maps are worth updating because it says it has Europe v 1035.9662 released 07/2019. Surprised the cable can't read it because I know some usb cables are power only, but this cable has a tomtom sticker on it. I presume I may need to install some software then? It looks like it's got an external memory card slot but it's empty. It says it has 4.41GB space internally (golly). As it happens, I have an 8gb micro SD card lying about, can it update that way or this is a software jobby? TIA.

You need to use MDC to connect to your PC, see [Please Register or Login to download file]

Thanks, does that software then let me see the contents of the device and back it up? I'm going to try another usb cable to see if that connects, I don't see how the software will help until I get the hardware issue sorted out first.

I wonder about the use of the term lifetime maps, it says on the box:

*"lifetime tom tom services: receive tomtom traffic, speed camera and 4 updates a year for any installed map at no extra cost, for the life of your product. tomtom account and internet connection needed. for more information , visit tomtom.com/lifetime.

there is no definition of what * means like ususually see on ts and cs so I wonder if it's merly behaving likea bullet point, having said that there is another sentence under it with ** "get tomtom services through your smartphone via bluetooth. extra costs may apply."

Now I've read somewhere sometimes map updates don't cost extra, is it worth connecting just to see what it does?

In a word, yes. "Lifetime maps etc" as misleadingly quoted by TT only mean until THEY decide to end-of-life their devices

Thanks, I tried another usb cable and different ports it still wont be seen by the pc.

OK well how would you advise I proceed? Would I still get support even though it's second hand? Shall I try updating over wifi for the sake of it? From what I have read I need to create an account with TomTom? I can't find any product support life cycle page on their site, it just keeps referring me to login in. How do I check if I can I use the maps I have already downloaded? I can't find any update go520 tutorial on here. TIA.

That model (any with WiFi) is a NAV5 device so that's what you need to be searching for here

OK well I am pulling my hair out now, the tutorials section doesn't have any form of organisation to it, I can't find any threads on a search on how to update go520 nor nav5 in general, I've tried the device on a laptop and the usb still won't see it and I've tried two usb cables. Do I need to join tomtom on this then? If I join can I still use the software to install any donated maps on here should it be the case the tomtom maps they install will be old? If so how do I do this? My drive connect only wants to run if I am connected to the net and it also wants a login. TIA

This is going from one extreme to the next...

This is a much newer device that works in a completely different manner compared to the older TomTom One that you are used to. You will not be able to browse the device with Windows Explorer as you did previously so the only way to administer it is to install MyDrive Connect as biggerdave has already said. Create an account with TomTom and then login with MyDrive Connect and update it. I don't know how much you paid for it but it's a LOT more modern that the old TT One you were playing with before with more advanced features.

OK guys well I am very pleased to say I joined TomTom for free and it updated it to June 2024 maps and OS which I am very surprised about, it says somewhere about paying £40 for a one off update or £44 for a yearly subscription. Anyway I am very grateful for the time, help and patience you guys have had with me, especially from Fredderf and Biggerdave. I just need to work out how to back this thing up now.

I'm opening up a cold one and will shortly be enjoying an Italian meal. I can't see any generic computer forums on here to really contribute to so I'll leave you guys with a big thankyou from me and be well.
