reason i ask is a friend has a go 540 live with 1 gig internal memory and a microSD card slot ,its has BL 5.5120 and he wants to put a card in with the north america map

No problem with SDHC cards but again the map is not related the the bootloader.

FFR, any good quality SD/SDHC card will work in any device, with B/L 5.5015 ( from navcore 8.300) or higher.
