Fastest TomTom for Panning Around Maps?

Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:19 am

Lately I have been spoiled by the speed of using Google Maps on my android device. I love having a dedicated navigational device but do not love how slow my TomTom XL 340 S draws the map when I am seeking around in the "Browse Map" mode. Also, when I zoom out during navigation it seems painstakingly slow. I have read that some of the Go x30 series units are faster but I am just curious if they really are faster when it comes to "drawing" the map.

My current TomTom specs:
TomTom XL 340 S IQRoutes Edition
NavCore 9.056.542741.2
64MB Ram (free: 18.2)
GPS v1.20 Boot 5.5136
Map: USA_Canada_915_5074

Do you guys think it would be worth it to find a x30/x50 on eBay and try it out or will it still be nowhere near as fast as Google? Are any of the new TomToms with capacitive touchscreen nearly as fast? Thanks.

9.510 is the current navcore for your 340. You might do an upgrade & look for an improvement, before you go any farther.

I've updated to 9.510 via CAB and it seems a little faster but for some reason it is not showing as many place names when "Browsing" the map. Thoughts?

Please define "place names".

Sorry, the city names, like "Des Moinse, IA" There seems to only be one city name per state until you zoom into about 4 bars from the most you can zoom.

1. Did you do an overwrite installation or a clean installation of 9.510?
2. I am running basically the same setup as you, & I have city names on the browse map 15 mi. scale.

Confirm you have Names checked in Main Menu, Browse map, Options, Advanced.

It was a clean install, other than copying the voice files from my original install. I also have the names selected in advanced. I went to the local big box electronic store and after playing with the new interfaces I think it is just time to put this baby out to pasture. Thanks for the help though.

I never do a clean install. I would have too much "stuff" to transfer, if I did.

The fasted way to plan a route is [Please Register or Login to download file] ,
but please don't ask me why TT does not offer anything to transfer such a route to a device :(

The TT Home "Use TomTom Route Planner" button takes you to the web page.
