Has anyone managed to upgrade the Navcore on a TomTom start.

Postby tombob » Sat May 07, 2011 12:38 am

As I said on this post :
http://www.navitotal.com/forums/showthread.php?5130-tomtom-start-10-navcore
To enable ALG on a start V1 I use the navcore 9.151 and reskin to "start2" provided by bmwdriver on this great tutorial :
http://www.navitotal.com/forums/show...-large-devices

It works fine and have more options than the original Start V1. One can also test another type of tomtom by changing the reskin file. But on my start v1 the only one with working sound is the start2 (i didn't test the start one, because i guess it is quite the same as the one i originaly have).
I would be great if there was a navcore for start which allows to enter gps position: with this navcore one can enable this option by using a reskin different from start2 but then the sound isn't working.

AS SUBMITTED
Now save this as TomTom.mnu (not as a txt file).
When this is saved copy it into the folder SdkRegistry in the tomtom.

Open setconfig.txt and replace model:X40 with modelid:39
then a 15 reset en start the device.

I do not have a setconfig.txt anywhere on my tomtom start. This patch does give me additional options anyway, but i lose the "Plan Route" option - so when i touch the map screen it just goes straight to the config options. Any idea what i can do to keep the extra options and still be able to plan a route? I am a novice at this, but with the additional options enabled i see my device is:

App 9.053.520930.2, OS 515773
(1023, 19/4/2010)
GPS v1.20, Boot 5.5274
If anyone can help. pl keep it simple for me if possible i am new to this...
thanks

Check the post above and follow BMWDRIVER's instructions than it should work fine.
Or try the 9.061 from here ::link:
So far I had no chance to test it on the new devices, so if someone wants to check it...

I was unable to download files from megaupload - registered etc but never got a download button (no idea why (maybe my problem, maybe the site??),
so i tried the 9.061 in your link and then added the tomtom.mnu as per post #13 to the sdkmenu folder. Still got no "Plan Route" option. I found by editing the tomtom.mnu adding another line as below that i got the plan route menu and some of the additional options. I also downloaded the config file as per BMWDRIVER's instructions and have numerous modes but only mode 39 will give me voices too - others are silent or want bluetooth which my tomtomstart does not support.
I have tried to download BMWDRIVERS 9.151 file from post #1 but the link is broken, and this seems to be the file i should use with the start2 mode for everything to work.
For what its worth, i also tried for mattmans method from <http://www.navitotal.com/forums/showthread.php?4668-TomTom-Start-NavCore-8-to-NavCore-9-upgrade-sound-working> post #1 but again the link for the file download is broken. Sigh!! :wallbash:
I am rather new to this stuff on patching tomtoms so if you can see anything dumb i've done i'd be happy to hear it. Or if there's another link which works to the 9.151 file or mattmans file that'd be good too. Sorry about the length of this post

You should not need the tomtom.mnu file with the Navcore I posted, just select an emulation that works for you.
That, of course is only valid if the Navcore will run on a Start...

Well, the navcore runs ok, but the only emulation that has sound is 39 and the SF one, which both seem the same anyway. The only additional option seems to be a 'navigate with postcode' icon on the screen which i don't want and can't remove, so i can't see any advantage to using them over the original. The 'Show Extras' does not add anything to the options. The tomtom.mnu provided by BMWDRIVER adds pretty all the options, even some that my device does not support (so of course those wont work), but i lose the sound. I guess if i could get that version to work with sound i'd consider it a success.

Its a 64 mb version. I have reverted now to an earlier version 9.053.520930.2-1023-9.053, Bootloader version = 5.5238. I have loaded the tomtom.mnu and with it enabled i do not get the 'plan route' option, but do get enhanced menu and the voice works. When it's disabled (by renaming the directory) the menu enhancement disappears but the 'plan new route' option returns - voices still work. One other point, somewhere in my playing i have managed to get an icon for 'plan route using postcode' on my main nav screen - small square, yellow with a green splodge and an orange splot in the centre, and this icon in both the mnu disabled and enabled takes me to a route planning page. Weird! I still have a full backup of my device before i started playing so i'm not worried, just bemused - maybe also frustrated? I see these menu options when using other skins etc which look useful but can't get everything working at once.

Have you followed the instructions with Loquendo and tried both patches?
Would be a pitty if really none of the patches works.
You can try again by simly kopying the LoquendoTTS folder from the archive to your device and if still no ggod try the LoquenoTTS folder from the second patch.
The problem is the TT now uses two differend device ID's - one for the TT and one for the sound.
This imho is also the case in the Navcores for those devices as without a suitable Loquendo patch some older devices go silent with those Navcores too.
Since my Navcore is DSA based it should be possible to ally the sound patches BMWDRIVER provided ?
If I understood the problem here corectly it is not the matter of getting a Navcore with full menus to work but to get the sound working as well.
I'll try to get in contact with the author of the DSA tool to find out if he can find a way to include a working sound patch for the new TT models.

I suppose that ypu got an other TomTom.mnu . I got a mnu with plan route and the voices works. I use a Start 2 and that is the same like the XL 2. I attached it so give it a try
When you plan a route use town or in the same line postcode.

Hi, yes, full menus with voice is my aim.
I'm still trying...I'm trying the 9.061 core now and the 37 skin which has lots of good menu items esp for planning routes and routes reviews. All excellent, but no voice.
So,to get voice I've tried the 9.061 Loquendo TTS,then tried copying the patch TTS from the 'Additional "Loquendo TTS Patch" folder, then i tried the same thing using the tts folder from the 9.161 core, then again using the folder from the 9.053 core, no success with any of those.
I assume that simply copying the Loquendo TTS folder into the tomtom from those other cores is the right way to do this? If i use the 39 skin which emulates the Start, which is what my gps is, voice works fine but of course theres no additional menu items beyond what tomtom have given me access to as standard.
I have just now tried the Loquendo TTS folder from core 9.205 but still no voice. Am i doing this all wrong??

Why would tomtom want to cripple this model by barring access to menu items??? (no answer needed for this bit)

Confirm that all of these LoquendoTTS folders, that you are trying from different navcores, actually have voices in them.

Not quite sure what you mean. My tomtom has a folder in the root called 'voices' containing files of type 'dataNN.vif' and 'dataNN.chk'. The loquendotts folder (also in the root) has subfolders named 'bin', 'lib', and 'data'. The data folder has subfolders named 'languages' and 'voices; the language folder has a subfolder called 'english', the 'voices' folder has subfolders named after characters ie dave, kate, susan etc containing files named eg 'dave.vde and several 'dave*.bin'.

There are no 'voice' folders of any type in the compressed files for the 9.061. 9.161, 9.205 corefiles i've downloaded from links on this site. So the additional loquendotts only have 'lib' and 'bin' subfolders. BUT, my process has been to copy those bin and lib folders into my tomtom's loquendotts folder, replacing the bin and lib folders already there. In a nutshell, my tomtom has always had a loquendotts folder with the original data folder and subfolders, but with a variety of bin and lib folders from the various cores.

Have i done that right?

Hi, what navcore number and bootloader are you using?
My problem with sdkregistry and tomtom.mnu is that if i use the tomtom.mnu i do not get a 'plan route' when i tap the main map screen. It takes me straight to the options pages. I have to disable tomtom.mnu by renaming it or the sdkregistry to get 'plan route' back. Voices DO work in both cases, but i can't plan a route - bit of an issue for a gps. ;)

Using the other approach for enhancing menus ie using the navcores 9.061 or 9.161 with additional skins is that using a non-native skin like the tomtomgo i get the enhanced 'plan route' etc options but do lose voices - unless i use the 'native' skin for tomtom "start2" (my own device) which gives me no enhanced options - bugger!

I'm now on nc 9151, menus are extended - 3 pages instead of the original 2 and more pages linked below those 3. Useful route planning and review options. Voice works fine. There are still more additional menu items i've seen using other skins, but maybe this'll do for me until someone smarter than me figures out how to get voice with those other skins on a start2. Thanks to downunder, holyhead and tendriver for their interest and time.
