OK, thanks for bearing with me Tendriver, I've sussed it out now.
I had saved the picture as 320x240 percentage, not pixels, so was just getting a grey screen.
I made a photo folder as you advised, but with the correct sized pics in it, it still didn't give the option of changing pictures when tapping 'done' on the startup preferences screen.
